I currently have a 1987 F-150 4x4 that has the ranger style locking hubs. I have an opportunity to get a Dana 44 TTB setup complete from an 1992 F-150.
Will the 92 setup bolt right up to my 87?
Thanks.
He is looking to ditch the one piece manual locking hub like was used on the Ranger/Explorer.
Yes, it will bolt in There is no need to swap out the whole axle assembly unless you were planning on replacing the axle bushings and u-joints in your current axle. The parts that you need are from the knuckle out i.e. axle stub shafts, spindles and the brake rotor/hub assembly. Bronco graveyard has/had a conversion kit to do this swap. The picture will give you an idea of what needs to be changed.
I have an '87 Bronco and had fought the oddball system for years. The hi-shear nut failed several times. It would back off because the stress from the 35" tires.
Thank you for your reply. You are correct about my wanting to eliminate that hub. If I understand correctly I could retain use of everything up to and including the knuckles on my '87 correct? (Only hubs, spindles, outer axle shaft, etc. change?) However, I may just want to take the whole assembly from the '92 and re-do all the joints, bearings, seals, fluids, grease, paint, etc. and swap the whole assembly. Any feedback greatly appreciated.
I removed the assembly in my '94 to replace the axle pivot bushings and the 3rd member to replace the gasket and seals. It isn't really necessary to completely remove it to do that though.
