Try more like 12wrms 20w max. Upgrading the speakers and not the radio might sound even worse then the stock set up. A small amp will make any speaker choice you pick come alive. You don't need speakers for the rear. If you don't want to amp the speakers right now go for a set that has a high efficiancey rating like 91 or better
ok. so what if instead of replacing the speakers, I just add an aftermarket amp and sub. How and where would I have to wire the amp into the truck wiring??
I got a MTX6500D mono amp, it has high level inputs, so I have to tap into the stock speakers. but how and where fronts or rears??
Adding a sub will not cover up the sound that you don't like but it will help in the fact you can lower the bass from your stock speakers. You can tap right into the rear outputs so you can fade the sub in or out as you like.
PrPlayboy....how come you said he doesn't need speakers for the rear? Are the rear OEM speakers better than the front OEM speakers? I was thinking of replacing all four of mine. Would that be a bad idea?

the cab in a ranger is small and having rear speakers that are amp will pull away from your sound stage. You could do it but you will have to set the gains lower the the front. So for a pick up it's just not worth it. In my Explorer I have my rear speakers hooked up to the radio and you can barley hear them. the fronts are so loud it's overwhelming...... If you not going to amp your speakers and want to change all four I would suggest an aftermarket radio because the stock radio will not be able to power most aftermarket speaker correctly.
ok hope this will help both of you. go to www.ford-trucks.com this site has everything you want to know about rangers and if the dont they find out for you for free. hope this helps
Lots of the high-end aftermarket CD decks are only 17-19 watts RMS, so that's not really much better than the factory unit if it's 12 watts RMS. I wish there was a place to get actual specs. on this 6-disc unit.

Actually most after market radios put out about 22-26 wrms.
Well, looking through a Crutchfield catalog, I was surprised to see that the only decks with over 20 watts RMS are Kenwood, Blaupunkt, and Alpine pretty much. Most of them, even the high dollar Clarions are like 17 watts RMS.
Now, I read did read somewhere that this 6-disc factory unit has an 80 watt, 4 channel amplifier. That would be...20 watts per channel I assume. So wouldn't that seem to be the same power that you'd be getting with another aftermarket unit?
I paid $295 for this player according to the window sticker, so I'm hoping I can get away with using it at least until warranty runs out or I have trouble with it. I guess maybe the difference is with the range of frequency response?
Well, I installed two Kenwood speakers in my front doors last night. With the factory stereo they sound WORSE. So I guess now I have to try upgrading the head unit.
When I installed my Infinity's 6x8, they sounded great. Maybe its certain speakers that sound better with the factory deck. ie. Pioneer, Infinity. But I guess not Kenwood.
When I turn the fade all the way to the front the speakers are amazing. But when I turn the fade to balance all 4 it sounds good. (I replaced all 4 speakers with the 6x8 infinity's.)
It might say 80watts but look at after market radios..... most say 40-50watts per channel Thats 160-200 watts right? Not really. What are the rating on the Kenwoods? Kenwood has some decent stuff and I heard a set of 6.5's that had nice vocals.
Well, these Kenwoods are 60 watts RMS, 240 max. They are three-way, have the greatest frequency range, and best response available for under $100. I've always used Kenwood stuff. It's the only brand that I have never had trouble with in my life.
When I removed my OEM speakers, I noticed that on the back, the magnets were stamped "25Watts". So they evidently are HALF as powerful as these Kenwoods. Which I suppose means I need twice the wattage pushing the Kenwoods to make them sound OK. So I'm going for a Kenwood head unit as soon as I can afford it. The Kenwoods have a setting for 6x9s programmed into them, so it should push these speakers OK.
