I am restoring a 73 F-250 Camper Special the id code indicates that the rear end is a Dana 60 with an open differential. I want to convert it to a limited slip (posi-traction). Is this feasible? What is involved?
If your axles are the 30 spline type there are two choices that i consider the "best". Others may beg to differ and that's just a matter of subjective choice. Spicer makes the "Posi" which ford calls the Trak lok and the Power Lok. The trak loc is a 2 pinion unit ...it is readily available and should run about 300 . The STRONGER unit has 4 pinion's and will run closer to 600 or alittle less. If your axle ratio is between 3:54 up to 4:10 the unit will bolt up without changes, I believe . If you have something LOWER than 4:10 I think you'll have to buy a different ring and pinion. I could be Wrong about this, but when you call any of the major advertisers (sellers)in the 4x4 books they can tell you immediately what your choices are. I think the 4 pinion unit is called the Power Lok. It is somewhat harder to find, and some suppliers will tell you it is not available . That is BS...as they just want to sell you the 2 pinion unit. If you are not familiar with what they look like once you've seen them you'll immediately SEE the difference between the 2 units. For fairly normal use the 2 pinion unit is more than strong enough to help you out. Personally , unless you know your way around diff's i would it take to somebody who is a Pro........sk
I agre the PowerLok is better/stronger. The internal guts are still made and available for the Dana 70. These are interchangable with the Dana 60 internals. But you do need a Data 60 case. Any spline count will do as the internals kit replaces them.
The problem arises if you have full time hubs on your axle. They locate the inner axles by rubbing up against the spider cross shaft. The Powerlok shaft is thicker. My solution was to cut 3/16" off the insides of each inner shaft and replace the outer shafts with part-time shafts.
This made for a very expensive posi in the front of my truck.
