Holy crap Epic, that is a stockpile. I thought I was bad when I was buying 2 boxes with 4 jugs each. For me that was 3 oil changes or atleast 9 months. It's good you have a pure hobby like your truck eh?
It looks like a lot but it's only 5 oil changes and kind of funny when you see it this way. I'm just pre-funding my maintenance plan and making sure I have the CJ4 I like until the CK4 thing shakes out. Filters are easy on DieselFilters.com. I'll bet the fuel filter kit will get cheaper pretty quickly so no need to load up on those.
Did my first oil change tonight at roughly 8500 miles. I can confirm that 13 qts is all it took. I can also confirm that 13 qts is what came out.
Also so check your air filter. I have never had an air filter this bad at 8500 miles. I normally wouldn't of checked it but I was showing my son how to do maintenance so we checked it. I'll be ordering one tonight.
BTW, I hate the oil filters. As much of a lemon that my 6.0L was (and yes lemon is the correct word as lemon law got it bought back years ago) the oil filter up top was a much better design.
I went to my local Walmart today and they had no 5w-40 cj4 left. I drove another 20 miles to a less popular Walmart and they had lots of 5w-40 cj4 in several brands. I bought 3 oil changes worth of Delo 5w-40 cj4. It was $17.50 a gallon. I might go hoard more this week because I just read more about Ford and ck-4 and don't see that they approve any 5w-40 ck-4. Only other choice would be to use Motorcraft brand at $40 a gallon. I bet most people don't know Delo and Rotella ck-4 is not approved.
I just changed the oil in my 2017 F350 6.7L for the first time. I used the Shell Rotella T6 5-40 CJ-4.
I called Ford customer service to confirm quantity of oil to put in? They said the manual is wrong-correct amount of oil for the 2017 6.7L is 13 quarts. Manual will be updated at next reprint.
Thanks to this thread I read the manual about oil changes on my F250 diesel and it left me a bit confused. Maybe you guys can help me out here.
If I understood the manual correctly, in severe duty for the diesel engine, the oil needs to be 5W40 CJ-4.
In normal driving, a 10W30 is recommended in my area (SE USA). Is that correct? What is the recommended API classification for the 10W30? Does it need to be a synthetic or is dino oil enough?
In my other diesel vehicle, a low ash oil is recommended due to the emission equipment. I did not see any mention of low ash oil in the manual. What is your opinion on using low ash oil in the diesel engine SD?
Regardless of the weight you choose for severe duty or not, the engine always requires a CJ-4 spec oil. Gasoline engine motor oils cannot accommodate the pressure and shear requirements of diesel engines. Hence CJ-4 = diesel engine. The question of dino vs synthetic has been argued every way. I use synthetic because I tow heavy and can run the engine oil to 245 degrees for long periods of time. That is close to the temperature that the parafins in dino oil begin to burn and break down. Synthetics are not "slicker" but they are pure and maintain their lubricant qualities at much higher temps. They also flow much better at very low temps so there is that advantage also.
