Cold start, idling problems

Just got this truck a couple days ago and it ran fine when I test drove it off the lot about three mornings later cold morning it started up just fine I threw it into drive and it started spitting and sputtering as if it was running out of gas I give it some gas to get it to idle up, after a little bit it would idle fine, got driving down the road and as long as the truck is warm it runs fine, it idles a little high once it is warm, but now every time on a cold start it'll crank up just fine until I put it in gear and then it spits and sputters and I just have to lay on the gas and get the truck warm before it will run right, if it does shut down on me spitting and sputtering and I try to crank it back up it will not crank unless I hold the gas pedal to the floor and then it will crank and idle just fine until I throw it into gear, what could be the problem

Well let's start with all the information you didn't provide.

What year? what engine? How many miles? Check engine light on?

You can still have stored codes or other issues without an active Check Engine Light.

Run the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) tests and stored code (Continuous Memory) display.

Thats impossible, if it spits sputters or dies, you have a code on a 1996. someone must have pulled the bulb from the light.

welcome to FTE.
pulled CEL light bulb is my guess also.
most used car dealers are the scum of the earth, and will cheap out any way they can to "fix" a problem to make it disappear so they can make the sale.

they are lower than snake sheit in the bottom of a wagon wheel rut.

I do agree something is amiss...

Out of curiosity, does the CEL illuminate when you turn the key to start?

If it doesn't, I wouldn't be surprised the bulb is bad or has been pulled.

I want to thank everyone that contributed to this thread. My 2017 Platinum started doing this at 70,000 miles. Any trip over with over 20 minutes of driving and then 30 of sitting would lead to a very hard start. At 135,000 miles it got worse. After sitting all night after a long 700+ mile drive or towing anything the day before, the truck seemed to stutter/hesitate for the first 5 minutes of driving. I finally bit the bullet and ordered a fuel pump.

I ran the tank to 0 miles and set aside 2 hours to do the job. It would have taken 45 minutes, but reinstalling the locking ring on the fuel pump was a PITA without the special tool. Ended up using a hammer and chisel for 45 minutes before getting it back into place.

Anyways, fuel pump was installed this past Friday and I have put 1500 miles on it in 90 degree Missouri heat since then. No issues at all. I will update if the problem resurfaces, but for the moment it appears to be fixed.
