By crate motor do you mean a long block? I just replaced the 4.9 in my 87 F150. I didn't get it from Ford, I got it from PowerPro2000 who in turn is just a dealer for ATK. Cost me $1300 delivered and they paid to pick up the core. 800 miles on it so far and its still running.

Ford "Windsor series" crate motors are a thing of the past, I think. About 10 years ago, you could get a 300, 302, 351 very easily, but not anymore.
A good rebuild is just as good, I would recommend doing that.
