'08 F250 TPMS sensor replacement question

So I have dug through 14 pages of search results and not found the answer I am looking for. I have a TPMS sensor malfunction in my left rear tire. It does not respond to the retrain tool and I suspect that the battery has expired. From the factory it appears I have the green band type sensors. There are 3rd party valve stem type sensors listed as "band replacement" and show as a proper fit for my truck. Does anyone have any first hand experience regarding these replacements? They are half the price of a new Ford sensor. Breaking the bead on one side for replacement is a far more attractive replacement scenario versus full dismount.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

I find the dash light annoying and the message center always reverting back to "TPMS Error" enraging.

Mine stopped flashing the messages and dinging after awhile. I think it gave up on me.....

You should have no problems replacing the sensor with a stem style sensor as long as it is the same frequency the truck doesnt know the difference.

I have an 08 as well. Here's what you need to know. The factory ones are in the center of the rim held in place by a huge band clamp. And they are opposite the valve stem. I replaced all four of mine myself using a harbor freight tire changer. What you need to buy are four stem type sensors that are a replacement for the OEM Ford part number. If you use eBay (I did) the listing should have a FCC ID number. It should match what is on the back of the retrain fob tool. It's also easy to find via Google the FCC ID on the Ford OEM ones.

I used
Oro-Tek Sensor Fits OE Application 8C2Z-1A189-A.

I took the tire off, removed the valve core and broke the top bead. Then I put it on the changer and removed the OEM valve stem. It comes with a torx head screw that has loctite on it already. Install the sensor on the stem and tighten. Get you a thin wrench that fits the nut on the bottom of the stem and press down on the tire (get someone else to) and install the sensor. Using the thin wrench hold the sensor and tighten the top nut on the outside of the rim.

Add air to pressure and reinstall then retrain. I never bothered to rebalance the tires, the sensor is not at all heavy. When finally 15K miles later I had them balenced, they were not out of balance. Dont know about where you are, but wally world will balance a tire not on a vehicle for $5. I haven't had them screw that up. Yet.

Hope this helps.

I just use black sticky dot to cover light. Message goes away with one push of button.

Thank you, this is exactly the info I was looking for. The FCC ID is a real good idea.
