ABSOLUTELY NOT! They can't hold the pressure of a brake system. Use flared fittings only.

X2, use only the correct fittings. It's not worth betting your life, or someone else's on compression fittings.

^yep, flares only - compression fittings are usually brass, too, and the fitting itself cant handle it......

Most brake line connectors are brass, has nothing to do with the material, just the design. Usually thicker and with more thread engagement to hold the clamping force.

I have kept compression fittings and line in the vehicle for emergency repairs, just to get it home or to a shop.

If you're needing to piece two lines together, the ends of the tubes need to be 45° double flared and connected with an inverted flare coupling.

True that, didn't explain that well - I meant to refer to the thin, external brass nut on a compression fitting, that's what usually splits and causes the failure. Brass in itself is plenty strong as far as a threaded fitting.

Agree no compression fittings on brake lines!

Double flare on mild steel line is easy with practice using a $15 tool and fittings are available at an AP store, good hardware store or on line.

Also, in some Eastern parts of Canada it's illegal to use compression fittings on brake lines. Don't know about B.C.

They will withstand the pressure but become work hardened at the fitting....which crimps the tubing upon install....causing an eventual break or leak.

I have never used a compression fitting on a brake line, would only do so as a very temporary get home repair, and always recommend against it when asked for reasons above ....
.... but I have found in my part time "retirement stay active and stay engaged" job at Advance Auto that there are mechanics who do use them regularly. Most don't .... but a few do.

Ok an update. I went down and rented a double flair tool. I got it home and it is a metric set. Will it still work? or should I just go back and get the standard set. Pia, the store is 20 min away.

You need the standard set. Sorry!

Also some extra brake line to practice first. A you tube video would not hurt either.

Typically the same tools work with 4.75mm and 3/16" lines. If you got a double flaring tool, it should work. The same line is sold to use in either. Practice is good. I have a couple of those tool sets, but the better tool I found that is cheap is the CalVan inline brake line flaring tool #161 .... or you can get a set that does several sizes and double and bubble flares. What I like is it's self alignment, quality flares, and ability to get in tight places. https://www.amazon.com/Cal-Van-Tools.../dp/B0076PAZHA

Ok another update. I had the metric set from the rental and returned it. They do not have a standard set ARRRg. But I have this single flaring tool from my dad 30 years ago. will it do the job?
