Cracking under bench seat?

I have an 84 f-250 I'm working on rebuilding and I just took out the seat but I noticed some cracking: this is from the passenger side. The driver side has less cracks. but I was wondering how Important it is that they're fixed, and what would cause them.

thanks for any insight, help, and ideas!

You need to investigate this closely but it looks like it's just sound insulation that's cracking and not the actual metal.

it's shiny compared to the metal and sets up about 1/16-1/8 of an inch above the rest of the floor. If it's just sound insulation I won't mess with it I'll just put new insulation above it. You can't ever have too much insulation.

It helps with water dispersion and rust prevention, too.

I don't know about that. I took it all out because one chunk was missing on the passenger side and it was coated in rust (only surface thankfully)

Remember that stuff has been there for ~30 years.
