My step son and I finally started working heavily on his dent today. Yes pics will be posted. We took the windshield out and the windshield channel and part of the roof is really bad rusted through. The fire wall and rocker panels are rusted through. I have the capability to fix but the amount of rust is almost not worth it in the long run since it is part of the roof.So my thoughts are I have a really nice super cab and frame no rust. Put all his running gear engine transmission rear end and front suspension on the super cab frame and cab. Or bite the bullet and fix many panels on his current standard cab? Or do I give him my replacement cab I just spent a lot of time and being very picky looking at a lot of cabs to find for my truck. Any thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated
How old is your son, and does he have time to go be ask picky in finding another cab as you were? If so I say give him a list of places you searched and let em have at it.
Hard to say without pics, but if there's rust through of the roof and the firewall, I'd find another truck if that's an option. But they are plentiful and cheap in my neck of the woods. That might not be the case where you are?
How old is the kid? When I was a teen/early 20s, I ran every piece of vintage sheetmetal I owned straight into the scrapyard, no matter how much work went into it or how much it was worth. (totally destroyed several rare rust free bumpsides, rare 70 cyclone GT, 4 speed big block cougars, etc. all GONE)
That said, if hes a relatively young guy, hes going to wreck it eventually anyway. I say bondo the hell out of it, give it a quicky paint job and let him run the crap out of it.
Save the good sheetmetal for when he gets a few more miles under his belt.
Here is some pics of the rust I'm really on the fence about. I'm not concerned with the rest it's easy repair. The kid is 18 and really needs the learning experience and the time put in fixing the truck so he can appreciate it. He is the typical millennial so he needs the blood and sweat and work for it.as for giving him the resources I used to find my cab well I can't get him to even figure out what he wants to do to make the truck his. I.e. his personal touch. So I'm glad he is not putting much effort in because I don't want to let him get his driver license yet until he grows up. I think building this truck and being around my stubborn a@$ will hopefully help with that. Sorry for the vent just giving a insight on why I'm doing this with him now to the pics and thank you all for the input it is greatly appreciated
This is the top of the windshield channel Very bad pic but the hole rusty areas are soft

If your going to scrap that can then I will take it. That's repairable in my book.
77&79. I totally agree with you. My wife thinks I should give him my cab. I said some pretty strong words of no. I want him to work and learn. 78Ford guy. If I do replace the cab I'll let you know. You will be the first I contact
77&79 or any body else that may know.i have been wondering since I push submit on my last post. I have a 75 e250 I wonder if the windshield channel would be close enough for patch material? I think I should grab the kid and go pull the windshield out and check. That way we can fix the cab much easier.
