Guys what do the salvage yards or builders get for 7.3L engine cores? A friend just removed one from a 2001 truck with 225K on it. It had a split #7 piston so they put in a used motor. It is complete. I would like to have it to rebuild for a spare. Who knows, maybe more. Just don't want to offer more then it's worth, or his boss can sale it for. You help is appreciated. There was no cylinder damage either.

I am looking at the "buy" list from one of the biggest core buyers in the country. For 2001 up 7.3 with turbo and injectors is $250 (deduct $100 without turbo). They don't even list a value for engines older than 2001. There are other buyers of cores, but this gives you some idea.

There are several things (at least) that would affect value. The first and most obvious one would be what all comes with that engine. Are the turbo and alternator included in the deal? Either way you're taking your chances on the condition of the internal parts. Then it's a matter of what you think it's worth, that's the biggest variable in value every time.
That 2001 should have forged rods in it, that's a plus. So...for me? I put it between $500 and $800 depending on what comes with and what shape it's all in. But that's just me in my geographical area. I got one sans turbo, alternator and IPR for $500 about a year ago.

Wow! Talk about an opportunist. I'd sell the injector cores for whatever I could get for them and scrap it out before I left someone have my core at that price.
I paid $350 for a complete '97 7.3. Everything from oil pan to turbo including complete writing harness. Totaled body but Engine was running with 68,000 miles on it.
Guys this is a help. Don't want to be out of line when I offer or he theys me want he wants. It is complete but no alternator or wiring harness. The head is off the passenger side and number seven piston is cracked. But all the cylinders look good. No marks. Yes it has injectors and turbo. They put in a used motor and they left this one behind. That's why I want it. Hope to find out next week. Just wanted to know what he could sale it for. My friend says he lets things set around and then sales all at the same time.
This one had no compression in number 7 so they pulled the head. The hone marks look good, but I am going to rebuild it at some point. So trying to keep the cost down. They put a running used motor in the truck and left this one behind. My buddy said it had a tuner in it, I wonder who's. That alone shouldn't have done that. You know what some mechanics say. Anyway hope to get a deal. Like that it has the injectors.
Thought I'd report back, the guy wants $1500.oo for it. I told him it's way over priced. After all it needs a full rebuild. Anyway I'll keep my eye out.
That's what I said too. And it would set till I got the parts I want and get ready to do it. Mine is fine and I plan to keep the truck. It goes back to my young days when I loved to build things. So is life.
