OK. Today I changed the ball joints on the passenger side of my 78 F 150 4W drive. It has the high pinion Dana 44. It went swimmingly till the very end. I had the upper zerk positioned to where I could get to it with a grease gun.....was ready to go. Put the axle in spun it to make sure it cleared...it did. Put it all back together and guess what was laying on the ground under the axle. that zerk...broken off at the threads. Well I just am not in the mood to take it all back apart before I ask, has anyone ever gotten a broken zerk out of their upper ball joint on the passenger side with out removing the axle? The threads are all that is left and they are not sticking out at all. Its all greased so it can wait till i get around to it. I figure I am going to need inner axle seals eventually because when I jacked up that side of the truck....gear oil came out on the drivers side. Also where can I get a tie rod boot to replace the torn one from pulling the tie rod to get the knuckle off. None of the ones at any local APS look anything like it. Do I just have to pull and replace the carrier to change the axle seals....no ring and pinion work?
extractors might work... if you rotate the shaft to where you can use the free space in the yoke to slide the broken bole extractor into and then up into the zerk use needle nose vise grips and see if she will come out.
Changing axel seals requires removing the axels, and carrier. So you can fix the broken zirc fitting at the same time. The carrier holds the crown gear.
