about cheap tires?

Time to change the old Michelin Cross before the winter! But between extensive renos on the house and my last credit card bill after the summer holidays, I can't afford the best and will have to settle for the cheapest all-season tires, which in Yellowknife means going to our old and faithful Canadian Tire. Under their "house" brand Motomaster, they have the Roughrider AT in LT255/70R16 @$133 CA, installed and balanced. Not too bad price-wise compared to my other option, Goodyear Wranglers @$290. Both have the same road hazard plan, free flat repair, etc. Problem is, while the archives on this site and others have extensive coverage of major tire brands like Michelin and Goodyear, I have no idea about treadlife or the quality/ride of the Roughriders...Does anyone have any experience with these?

I can't answer you question but maybe you can answer mine. Can you buy tires off of the internet, maybe from somewhere here in the States? Then you would only have to get hosed on the install.

You guys have Costco where you're from? I got Michelin LTX M/S tires there for my F-250, 285/75R16 (this tire usually runs for more $$$ than even a 265 due to size), with lifetime balance, rotation, road hazzard, etc. for around $740 US, and a $50 rebate to boot. And this is a premium tire -- translating into an expensive tire. I'm sure Costco has some less expensive alternatives that have to be better than the cheap ones you're considering. Check it out.

P.S. -- I priced these tires on the web, too. Best price I could find including shipping was still within $2 of what I paid. And that didn't even include the mounting & lifetime perks I got from Costco. As often as I like to rotate (the F-250 puts out a lot of torque on the back tires -- gotta' rotate about every 5,000 miles if you want to get good mileage out of your rubbers), I saved a big bundle.

P.S.2. -- If the costco route doesn't work for you, try sites like epinions.com and tirerack.com for reviews. You could also go to google.com and do a search for the tires you're considering.

Good luck!

I am in the states but I got my Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO's for $125 each mounted and balanced from a local tire guy. Call around for these tires or see if Tirerack.com will ship to Canada. These tires are the best ones around.

Phil, to answer your question there are some decent "generic" tires out there. When it comes to tires, like batteries, there are only a small handful of manufacturers with hundreds of different names. Ask the friendly salesman at Canadian Tire who makes the Motomaster and decide if you like the manufacturer. I understand your dilemma, but I've always been a firm believer in higher priced quality tires for obvious reasons. Head over to tirerack.com and do some research. They have customers rate tires. Right now, the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos seem to be the favorite. I've got the 693 Dueler A/T's on my Expy and they have performed flawlessly with ~30K miles.

Also, all tires have three governmental ratings for traction, temp and treadwear. Check out this link:

Good Luck.

I can't add any input on the roughriders as I am not familiar with that tire. The cheapo tires may be the way to go until you are in a better financial position, but keep in mind that you will probably be back at the tire store having them changed out sooner than if you bought a good qaulity tire in the first place. So in the long run you would be spending more money.

I just had the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's installed earlier this week on my Expy. Size 265/70/17 and I got them for $125 US each after a 15% off coupon from my local Firestone store. I did a lot of research on which tire to buy and my short list included the Michelin cross terrains, the Bridgestone Dueler Revo's and the BFG All Terrains.

The Revo's won out for me because of the price and all the good reviews from all the happy owners. So far they are a huge improvement over the old Goodyear Wranglers.

Thanks to all for the good advice. Up here, no Costco, and Tirerack and other internet tire merchants do sell to Canada, but unfortunately the shipping costs quoted for Yellowknife made their bargain prices become astronomical. Finally, after looking at all options and talking to the good Canadan Tire tire guy, I opted for the Roughriders LTs, which are actually made by Goodyear. So far after a weekend on our terrible roads, I am quite pleased with the ride and handling. They are far better than the original Michelin Cross Terrain which didn't even last 40K miles. The real test will be this winter where the cold rather than the snow, is the real issue for tires because at temps below -30 even the best tires just become square...unfortunately it's coming in a few weeks!

about cheap tires?

Here's a thought. As I've posted in numerous replies about tires, I work part time at a Sears Automotive in Virginia. I've worked at three different Sears and actually from base to base. But, here's my point. Right now we've got some 2557016's, General SUV tires for $61.99 each. Add that up and for name brand tires (not the best but pretty good tires) mounted, balanced and out the door for a bit over 300 bucks. You ought to make a call and see if your local dealer has any and if so, I'd get them quick. They were a special purchase for Sears. I know we've got a bunch here in Virginia. They are 60000 mile tires and although some have factory defects, Sears will ensure you get good tires on your vehicle.

Cheers.
