might want to call around some on that B&W. there is a local camper store here that sells them installed for less than $500. Most places around here were 800, with only one being in the 1,100 range. just check around, you may be able to do better on price.
Thanks for all the replies I feel allot better about this now.
I do regular maintenance oil change every 5,000 miles all Ford parts. I was thinking of getting the transmission flushed about a month before trip. Shouldnt be to bad on hills and terrain as I am going east coast and will probabbly head down to texas and hit I10. Im not a mechanic but I do use my manuals anytime doing work ie haynes. I was quoted about 1,100 for having a B&W 30,000 gooseneck installed but not sure how on point that is. That also looked like a novice job except making sure the hole is cut perfect. Is there anything besides transmission flush oil and breaks that would benefit before heading out. Thanks again for all the help.
transmission fluid change.. AND power steering fluid..
I 10... a section of I 10.. has serious bump issues.. like 30 miles ... do 50mph ... as everyone will be also.. including semi's
like driving down stairs.. ground shift... concrete shifts..
I did it 2 months ago.. west bound only. I am told other way is fine.
Starting to wonder y i had any doubts now. Thanks for heads up on I10. Called around best price i got for b/w over under installed with hitch 650 out the door. Should be getting installed in the next 2-3 weeks.
I have a '12, and I pull 11,800 lbs with mine, it's the one in my sig. No problems what so ever, even with the 3.73 gears that it's popular to hate on these forums. You will be fine. I have the B & W turnover ball hitch (plus companion 5th wheel hitch) in mine, but had it (and the air bags) installed. Great hitch, very happy with it. Same with the Firestone bags. I didn't put a compressor on mine, and use a single air fill. It's fine. I do carry a small 12v compressor in my truck tool box, just in case I need to add air while on the road (I haven't needed to).
Manual mode on the transmission is your new best friend. Seriously, you must try this. It has made all the difference for me and towing my 5er. It's like driving a different truck.
Make sure your trailer brakes work, and are properly adjusted, and this trip will be a non-event. This is what these trucks were designed and built to do.
Safe travels.
Beautiful 5th wheel slowpoke! Great information! What make and model is it? Inmaynbe looking to upgrade from our Rockwood Signature Lihjtweight now that I have my new 2015 6.2 with 3.73 axle. My truck came with the Firestone airbags and compressor. Thanks!
Thank you. It is a Grand Design Reflection 318 RST. 34' long, and just a touch under 13' high. It has a max gross of 14K, but we're no where near that, scaled weight on a CAT scale is 11,800 with full water tank, all our food, clothing, beverages and 4 Labrador retrievers on board.
Let me know how that install goes. I heard that the spot in the bed was only for Ford's gooseneck package and for a b&w you should measure cuz it will be slightly back from center of the stamped hole.
My question is I have read the towing guide and states 12,400 for gooseneck. I will be moving from CO to Fl and the weight of the gooseneck will be extremly close to max. Has anyone towed in the 12,000 range with this setup. I know the engines built today are allot better I just dont want to overload my truck. Any advice or recommendations welcomed thanks.
Yes. I pulled heavy with the 6.2L and 3.73's often enough that I swapped gears for 4.30's. I also added airbags for stability. Trailer in sig is 14,773 Gross. You'll be in 2nd gear through the mountains if not lower. But if you're just doing one trip, you should be alright. The sway control and trailer brakes are excellent on the Super Duty trucks.
Just an update drive down from CO on friday and picked up a good deal on a 32 foot cargo trailer. Towed back and got lessons real quick in construction, heavy wind gusts, rain, and quite a bit of snow. All in all truck pulled like a dream. Now air bags in about a month and I will be set. Also didnt squat the truck that much at all. I am a lil worried with all our stuff I may be a few hundered punds over max tow.
