64 driveshaft questions
My truck started life as a longbed and a PO shortened it to a shortbed. I thing is either the carrier bearing is out or the bushing around it is bad. I can grab the drive shaft and wiggle it quite a bit. It isn't noisy driving, but there is quite a bit of vibration at around 40 mph.
-Do the short bed trucks have the same shortshaft with the carrier bearing, or just go straight from the tranny to the rearend like late model stuff?
-Is there a good walkthrough for replacing the carrier and bushing?
Thanks!
Going to a single shaft is a little more involved than you would think...yokes ect ect ect you'll have to look see what you need.
Bushings and bearings can only help but their is the real possibility that the vibration is not caused by that component. The worn bushing may be a symptom rather than the cause.
Going to a standard shaft might mean changing the transmission as I think the transmissions used on LWB trucks with hanger bearings had a different mainshaft made for a stationary on non slip yoke.
Long beds have a two piece driveshaft with a driveshaft center support that includes a bearing, large U shaped rubber support.
Between the front and rear drive shafts is a slip yoke along with a u-joint. So there are three u-joints, one at the front, one at the center and one at the rear.
