CA 460 improvements

A little history first. I bought a beautiful 1996 F350 dually last year. It's a California truck so it has the MAF system on it. Currently the mileage is 135,XXX. I have a CAI on it that I made since I didn't like K&N's idea of just plopping a filter on the end of the stock hose. It runs good for the most part but periodically throws a lean code for bank 2 and sometimes for both sides. It started doing this even before the CAI install. Sometimes the truck will seem to stall and then come right back on within a matter of a couple of seconds. At some point in it's life the passenger and driver's side exhaust manifolds did the usual warp deal and broke the back two exhaust bolts. The previous owner replaced the driver's side head because of this but didn't do the passenger side. Needless to say I broke multiple easy outs trying to get them out so I put a new gasket on and just made sure the rest of the bolts were good and tight for now. Other odds and ends are an Accel coil and wires, new stock dizzy, and new Motorcraft plugs.

I would like to wake this thing up since it is really restricted in factory form. The factory rating of 210hp and only 340+/- ft tq is just way too low for a motor like these. I've toyed with the idea of converting it to a carb set up but I read where the E4OD would freak out. I'm not totally against swapping in an AOD or even a 5spd (personal choice) if I had to. I haven't been able to find a whole lot for these MAF 460s in terms of performance. It gets used for just about everything. Commuting to work on occasion, pulling a 23' center console boat, to taking trips to the mountains and beach. Not really concerned about fuel mileage as this is a 6000lb crewcab dually . It already gets 8-9 mpg. If you guys had a set up like this what would you do with it?

Are you in CA? If so you can't swap to a carb because of smog. The MAF efi is easy to tune I guess, with that you can do all the normal stuff to warm it up a bit. Headers, a hotter cam, raise compression ratio. If you're in CA you'll have to make sure everything you do is CARB compliant.

No, I live in NC. Here, one ton and higher trucks are exempt from emissions testing. The only thing that is checked are lights, and safety equipment. Hell, the truck doesn't even come with airbags.

Ok. I don't know what kind of performance you want for sure. You want something that just tows decent, or do you want something that'll really get down and surprise people? If you want something that'll really do it I'd ditch the efi and go carb, 9.5:1 cr, .550ish lift cam. The heads aren't really that great for tons of power though.
