Hey all I have an 88 bronco 6" lift and 35" tires with an aod stock trans and stock 3.55 gears the truck really lugs in the lower end of the rpms. I should mention that I have put a 5.0 ho motor from a mustang in which was a battle all on its own. My question is should I be looking for a different rear gear to help the drive train? if so what would be the recommendation
I had that trans/tire size combo years back. the AOD has a tall over drive gear and being that the 302 likes a bit more rpm to make power I would recommend going with 4.88's the little extra gearing wont impact your hwy driving much and it will help the AOD live happy.
in the meantime do not use your OD gear, you will burn up the over drive band. then once your gears are done don't engage OD below 50mph to keep that OD band happy.
don't forget the front diff will need similar gears also if you ever plan on using 4wd.
