I recently bought a 79 ford F150 with Ranger trim and emblem on both front fenders. It has only had 2 owners. This truck does not have a stock motor or transmission however I do not know where to identify what motor it is. I know it is a 351W or 351M. How would I go about finding out what motor it has?
Sorry I did not follow up until now I'm still getting familiar with the forum. I counted 8 bolts on the valve covers so apparently this would make the motor a 351M.

Thanks for coming back and updating the thread. Post some pictures of the truck and engine and you will get much more info/feedback. Plus we like pictures of old trucks

Yep, sure thing i'll post some pictures when I get home from work.
I counted 8 bolts on the valve covers so apparently this would make the motor a 351M You cannot go by the number of valve cover bolts to ID the engine size.
8 valve cover bolts per side: 1970/74 351C (only factory installed in cars); 1971/82 400; 1975/82 351M. Your 1979 F150 could have come w/a 351M or 400.
If your 1979 F150's block casting number prefix is D7TR .. it's a 351M or 400 from a 1977/79 F100/350 or 1978/79 Bronco.
You'll have to measure the stroke to determine whether it's a 351M or 400. Stroke: 351M = 3.50" / 400 = 4.00."
