302 Engine Swap

I have a 1969 F100 with a 360FE. I have a 302 that i want to swap in. The transmission is a T18 4 Speed. What do i need to change besides motor mounts and what bellhousing do I need?

Below is an FE bellhousing for a manual trans which was backed by an NP435. Ain't it purty?

The NP has the same pattern as a T18. Both are considered "wide pattern" transmissions.

You'll need to find an SBF bellhousing with a wide pattern. Below are the dimensions.

You're on your own regarding input shaft length.. I don't have any info on that. Perhaps one of my FTE brethren will chime in...

so what your saying is that it is possible. The 302 has a C6 on it right now

Please do your own research! I Googled quick and by deductive reasoning the answer is yes...

Read this in whole: The Novak Guide to Installing the Ford Windsor V8 into Early CJ Universals, 1946-1971

Snippet:

"...Some 1965 and all 1966 and later 289, 302, and 351 Ford V8s are referred to as "6-bolt" engines because of the six bellhousing to block attaching bolts. These 6-bolt engines have a transmission bolt pattern that measures about 8-1/2" wide by 6-5/16" tall with a bore diameter of 4.850"."

And this: The Novak Guide to the Borg-Warner T18 & T19 Transmissions

..."The Ford T18 has a 1-1/16" diameter, 10-spline input shaft that has a stick-out of 6-1/2" from the front face of the transmission. The pilot tip of the transmission measures ~17mm. The front bearing retainer flange measures ~4.85" and the bearing retainer tube is 1.43" in diameter. The front bolt pattern is the symmetrical Ford "butterfly" pattern; roughly 8-1/2" wide by 6-5/16" tall. The input shaft stick-out length is 6-1/2"."

Nothing I found on the web indicated that a shortened input shaft would be required.

More than the engine mounts will have to be changed. The I-6/FE engine perches will have to be swapped to 302 perches as well.

Another thing you will have to contend with is the clutch linkage. The earlier 302 block had a ball socket mount on the block. Newer ones do not. There are brackets available that require you to drill one of the treaded holes out on the block to install the clutch equalizer. I'm not sure if http://www.cjponyparts.com/clutch-eq...FYhWDQodnPYCCQ
will work or not. If it would work I figure this is a better set up.

Same engine supports aka perches/towers/stands: 1969/79 F100 302; 1975/79 F150 302; 1977/79 F100/350 351M/400 2WD

All 302's use a 6 bolt bell housing. The 5 bolt bell housing was used on 1962/64 221/260/289 and 1965 Mustang 260/289 before production date 8/23/1964.

Look in your local JY or PNP and see if you can find a Bumpside or Dentside that had a 302 and 4 speed in it. 69 and newer Bumps with a 302 could have been A/T or M/T. From it buy everything you'll need. Mount stands, bell housing, clutch linkage, pedal, driveshaft (Bump), floor tranny cover, etc.

There are probably more 302 1969/79 F100's, 1975/79 F150 w/a 3 speed M/T than a 4 speed M/T

1969/77 302's with A/T would have the C4, 1978/79's could have the C4 or C6.

Regardless, check the bell pattern.

Agreed. But there were 302/4 speed trucks.

Yes, but today are probably about as rare as dealer principles that actually care about their employees!

You should look at the M5R2. You'll need to use a hydraulic clutch. I've been considering this for my truck. I currently have a 3 speed top loader that is great but no overdrive.

Make sure the 302 crank is made/machined to accept a pilot bearing. Have run into this before on engine swaps and rebuilds. Cranks that were originally used with an automatic may not accept the pilot bearing.

There's only one crankshaft for A/T & M/T

I've never seen a crank listed in a Ford car or truck parts catalog that is specific to one or the other...and I've been looking up parts in Ford catalogs since 1962.

Pic from 1973/79 truck parts catalog shows ONE 302 crankshaft for 1973/78: D2OZ-6303-B A/T or M/T makes no difference.
