Okay, i'm back here on the forum...yeah it's been a while but i thought i was through with mechanical and on to body work...ARGHHHH!!!
I am having problems with my distributor, I have replaced the original carb with a two barrel holley, removed emissions equipment (no emissions here) and now i want to replace my distributor with a points distributor, with a vacuum advance.... I need to know what points distributor i can go to, I don't need a "performance ignition"....just somethin' simple...any suggestions???

first of all, they are simple...never, on any old points truck i've had did i get stuck in the middle of no where without a ignition module to fix the truck
second thing is...i'm ripping everything out of this truck....i just want basics...no modern stuff....all i need is for it to run..lights to work.. etc etc etc...
Yall can keep all that electronic stuff....i prefer my life without it...up here in the cascades, with the closest parts store a 120 mile trip...simpler the better...and points are easier to keep spares in the truck than all that other stuff
I wonder if a points distributor off a older 302 would work if it does go to the junkyard. But there is more to go wrong on a points distributor anyway. I would just leave it if it works.
well any points distributor from a 351, 302 distributor shaft will be shorter won't work with a 351, I'm assuming you don't have a roller cam for some strange reason. But I still don't know why you would want a points distributor a durasparkII system is much more reliable, it holds up to water better, lasts longer, has a stronger spark, and is just as easy to wire into your truck. there is no advantage to a points distributor at all if you're worried about spare parts you can mount 2 ignition modules on the firewall next to each other and in the rare case that one goes out then you can just swap the wire's don't even have to take the distributor cap off and you're back on your way.
Well, if you're bound and determined to go with points just pick up a distributor and coil for a 69-73 Mustang/Torino/Ranchero (off the top of my head). Be sure to use a ballast resistor as a points coil uses less than 12 volts while running (12 volts when starting). If you run 12 volts all the time, it will work until you burn up the coil, condenser, or points. Usually in that order.
I went through something similar on my old Harley, spending a bunch of money to upgrade it to electronic ignition. After a bunch of screwing around and having problems 600 miles from home, I said screwit and went back to points. Happy ever since.
In contrast to a variety of Fords I've driven and am driving. Most had Duraspark II's or I converted them to it. I keep a spare Duraspark box around (currently own 3 Mustangs, 2 F150's, and a Bronco) but in 20 years, I've yet to ever need it. Or in fact ever have any Duraspark related problem. Ford did good.
Now if only they made a Duraspark for Harleys....

GypsyR, This truck doesn't even have the right wiring for a duraspark two...seems funny to me, but looks like oe wiring...
and as for the harley....there's a few good ignitions out there, but i'm a magneto fan there ....laughing...been told that magneto's are obsolete, then i see all the racers using them still...it's one of those things...ya got it all set right and keep an eye on it from time to time...it'll never fail ya...
k i'm gonna go try to find a distributor today.....so far three wouldn't work cause they had short shafts...and they were all spose to be for 351w's ....ya ever feel like chokin a parts guy????
get one for an 82 bronco. it has to be from a 300-6 or it won't fix. if you have a EEC-IV, just disconnect the harness from the fenderwell (by the windshielder washer tank) and plug in a duraspark 2 module (trust me, all the plugs are different, you cant screw it up), and then connect the harness u get from an 82 to the distrubutor and then the ignition box (plus you'll have to plug in the temp & oil pressure senders as well).
