Draining fuel water separator

I did a quick search and didn't find any obvious threads answering this question.

Anyway, Just bought a used 2015 F350. I want to drain the water separator as the dealer can't tell me when it was done last. Anyway, I read how to do it, but once you drain it, what do you do with the diesel that drains out with t? How do you dispose of it safely each month?

Thanks.

You can dispose of it the same way you would with used oil.

I would also be changing the fuel filters as that may not have been done either.

they should do it as part of the buying process, imho.

I agree they should have, but maybe because they know when they were last done? The vehicle was bought new there and traded there, so they had the service history. The filters have about 8000 miles on them.

Thanks on the disposal. Like used oil huh? Have to get used to working with something not as flammable as regular gasoline.

I did read that when the tank is over 3/4, I might have to loosen the bowl first so fuel doesn't just keep flowing and the anti siphon valve kicks in. That made me wonder - first, anyone actually need to do that (loosen the bowl when tank is full), and second, it says to drain for 25 seconds. Will it stop draining after a while (about 25 seconds I guess), or will it just keep on flowing clean diesel from tank and I just close it up after 25 seconds? Just not sure what to expect.

Are you just draining the bowl to check for water, or to change filters?
If just checking for water, use a clear glass jar, open the yellow petcock valve and drain about a cup into the glass jar and re-close the petcock....done deal.
Leave fluid in the jar for a bit and look for water in the bottom of the jar.
If you are changing out the filter, then do the un-screwing the bowl thing to close the anti-siphon valve.
Best of luck to you with the truck.😎😀😎😀

And as an addendum, as long *** the fuel in the jar is clean, I cheat.....I just dump it into the fuel tank on my tractor!!😎😀😎😀

Why waste the diesel! I agree.

But I'm just checking for water. I have a full tank though, and the supplement might siphon the gas out if you don't loosen the bowl, so I assume that meant it would not stop flowing, suggesting that if it was less than 3/4 tank that it would stop flowing after a while. I'll just do the 25 seconds thing and tighten it up, or should I loosen the bowl beforehand given the full tank?

No, don't loosen the bowl, just let it drain a bit. The water should be the first thing out (if there is any ).

Ha I do the same thing. Sometimes I pour it into my diesel powered heater in the shop.

Whenever I buy a used vehicle I change all the vitals and filters, OEM Only, so that I have a base line and know that the proper filters were used.

The water should separate to the bottom immediately. If you don't have any water in it or can't tell, drop some water in your glass so you know what it looks like in the future.

I fling out my diesel along the fence line to kill the weeds.

Thanks. Good idea to add some water so I know what I'm looking for. What I have is just solid lime green looking diesel.

As I drained mine for the first time in my 2016, the fuel drained not only from the drain port, but also from behind the yellow ****. Is that normal? It seemed to me it should only come from the port.

Mine did the exact same thing! I thought it a bit weird and kind of messy. Maybe we unscrewed the yellow **** too much?

Yeah probably unscrewed it a hair too much. Not a problem though.
