Just bought me an 84 and going to do some work on it. This is my first rebuild so I could use some FTE help. I'm not much of a mechanic so don't blow me away with to much technical stuff. I'm starting of with rebuild the engine and going to do a few upgrades... intake, exhaust & new cam maybe ...
84 4.9 i6 long bed 2 wheel manual 4 speed regular cab
I want to drive this truck maybe not to work every day (200 mile round trip) but occasionally and on weekends to Roswell (40 miles away)
1 My buddy is telling me to put in an RV cam so what advantages come with doing that?
2 swapping out intake for a larger carb. Which one fits my use offy dual plane or "c"?
3 looking to buy a rebuild kit but afraid of buying from Amazon or eBay because not sure of the quality. Summit doesn't have one for my truck what do y'all thank?
Good 1000s of other???? But we'll start there.
Thanks in advance

First off....with a handle like Boots On The Ground, I can figure that You are a Veteran ?
Second...let's get Your VIN and Cert Label decoded so we know exactly what we are dealing with. No doubt you have come across the very best forum when it comes to your Bullnose. You will not be disappointed...Talkin' Offy ? We speak the language...8th gen split manifolds for the Big 6 ? We speak the language. Welcome
Check the radiator sticker and the distributor. If the distributor does not have a vacuum advance and vacuum line going to it, then you have a computer that controls the timing and the carb, along with some sensors and some vacuum tubing. 99% of the time this system is not working, so the engine runs poorly. You can convert it to a earlier system if you do not want to mess with the computer setup.
Why do you want to do a rebuild? Is it smoking or using oil? As you can see from my first paragraph, you have more to deal with than just the basic mechanical part of the engine. You may want to get it running as well as you can first before doing a teardown/rebuild. Unless it has something major wrong with it.
When I got the truck I was told that it had oil pressure issues and since I want a bit more than a driver (something I can pop the hood and admire) we decided to do a rebuild. We've already removed the engine and tranny and started stripping it down. Of course that's when we found the oil pick up line packed with bits and chunks obviously from a timing gear gone bad. Ill look for the parts and info y'all mentioned when I get back from work tomorrow morning
No unfortunately not a veteran. Was given the name by one at work because anytime anything needed done I was the first running out the door and always involved in the work and elbows deep in grease and oil. Instead of my feet up he said I always had my boots on ground.
I love my freedom and I thank daily all those that gave it to me
Welcome to the forum, Boots on ground! I am an advocate for a good stock engine and what it offers. The 6 banger can be made to go faster, but costs will go up.
Consider a good basic rebuild and engine detailing [since you mentioned wanting to pop the hood and admire] and then enjoy the moderate power output with abundant torque at low engine speeds, which the 4.9L offers. This engine, if driven carefully and maintained well, will provide a long life, ease of mind and relatively good gas mileage. Just my 2 cents worth!

Got off shift this morning and was planning on spending a week with the truck but half way home I got called back so I can't get the info until Friday.
Whats my cert label that I need decoded and where do I find it? Yep this is my first time.
Planning to take the head to a shop this week and then spend time in the engine compartment scrubbing away 30+ years of grime and maybe do some painting in there. Budget say I'll be doing bits at a time on the engine for a few months unless I keep getting overtime lol
I don't have a vacuum advance on the dist I'm good with going either computer or not. This is a project and I know I'm in for a lot. Every night Wifey and I talk about a different piece and the tab keeps going up but she's having fun too.
Yeah, me, too... he's been doing some work on moving information around and trying to redirect incoming clients to different places, looks like he torqued with something and it broke.
I get the same but it's Gary so there's no doubt it will be fixed when he gets back. I'm surprised that he didn't try to fix it with his phone on the drive back.
