FRUIT what's wrong?

Apples and oranges are out of season in North america at this time of year. Just about anything you find are either out of Controlled atmosphere vaults, or shipped halfway around the globe. Unfortunately, many of these fruits are bred for durability rather than taste now.

When i get asked at work what a good kind of apples are at this time of year, i point at the Peaches and plums!

Err... Oranges are always in season in California, right over the state line. I have no idea why they should be crummy for some reason.

It seems to me they'd be delivered overnight in a reefer truck just about direct from the grower.

FRUIT what's wrong?

It seems like the only good fruit these days are the ones you grow yourself or from a small, natural farm.

Nothing beats a good Florida Orange right from the tree.

Like Fordzlla said, almost all produce is bred for durability first, yield second and flavor a distant third. I don't know how far back you are comparing to though. Last week, a couple of years back or a quarter century ago.

You might try finding 'heirloom' growers or sellers. Very often 'heirloom' varieties were specifically bred for taste because they were grown at home for consumption at home.

Alternatively, if all your food is not tasting as good as before there is another explanation. As you age, your taste buds become less sensitive. Maybe old age is sneaking up on you.

FRUIT what's wrong?

I just picked up some great peaches, tomatoes and plums from a local farm stand. We grow several varities of apples and pears. I expect they'll be ready for picking if not now in the next couple of weeks. Kids have been shaking the trees and eating a few that fall as has the dog.
This is a good time of year for fresh fruit in New England.

FRUIT what's wrong?

I just happened to be chewing on a big, juicy, crunchy Red Delicious apple as I came across this post. It has absolutely no taste whatsoever. I even put some salt on it, to no avail. A waste of money.

I know I grow my own fruits and they sure taste alot better than the store.

Nothing like home grown tomatoes.

FRUIT what's wrong?

We bought some cherries locally grown and they were smaller than average and the taste was not as good as previous years. Could be because of the drought we have had for I think the last 5 years now.

The only store bought apples I have found that are juicy and delicious are some Fujis and Ill be darned if I know where they came from. Red Delicious for several years have been blah to me.
