Now the fun part. I can't seem to find anyone that will fix this for less than $3,000. Is this the going rate now for head gaskets, bolts, labor, coolant, oil, resurfacing the heads etc... Seems excessive. I was hoping for between 1500 and 2k
Unfortunately the labor involved is quite intensive. When you have the front cover all apart and all that good stuff, it's best to replace the timing chain and guides as well since they're about 15 years old with the age of your truck and that's going to add to your cost.
Depending on where you live, rusty & broken bolts can be an issue so additional time may be needed. If you can find a good deal on a used motor, Kdr358's suggestion is probably the cheaper and easier route.
Well it is getting fixed. Found a place that would do it for $1500. Includes, new thermostat and gasket, gaskets from the heads all the way up, new coolant and oil, new plugs, resurface and inspect the heads, labor and a 1 year unlimited mileage parts and labor warranty.
