Hi all I am fairly new to this site and have a question. I am building a 76 F100 (kind of a street rod). I have installed the CV front suspension from a 2008 CV and am now looking at my options on the rear. The idea of IRS from a Lincoln Mark8 is very interesting to me but wanted to get some insight. I am installing a 460 that I plan on putting out around 650 HP and I really want some wide tires in the back tucked into the body of a style side short bed. I had originally planned on installing a 4 link rear suspension with a 9" rear to eliminate the springs and clear the path for wide tires to fit between the frame and the exterior of the bed. Now that I have learned about the Mark 8 IRS I am struggling with which way is the best. I am a little concerned with the Lincoln not being strong enough and possibly not allowing me to put the wide tires I want under the truck. I love the idea that is has the disc brakes and the same bolt pattern as the CV front rims. Any input or comments would be greatly appreciated.
The 90,s t birds use the same rear diff as the Lincoln. They are narrower than a 9", so stuffing wide rims and tires on should work out pretty good. They are 8.8 rears with factory ford trac lock, very strong diff. I don,t know about 600hp tho. A bilt 9" might be the way to go with the 4 link and add disc brakes to it.

what did you do with the rear of your truck. Irs or 4 link?
I ended up going with a 1989 Tbird rear and bought the install kit from Team 321. Was fairly easy to do and they were very helpful when I had a question. Still have a long way to go but I think I made the right decision
Gatorman, You have done a lot of work and I am interested in seeing more. I have a question concerning the front angled IRS mounts. Are you going to cap the tops, so water can't enter them, or is that accomplished another way?

Actually I can’t cap them because I would not be able to get to the bolt in the bottom but I do have drain holes in the bottom to keep from collecting water.
There are 9" IRS's available through the aftermarket. With 600+ hp, and the torque of a 460, I'd be worried about anything smaller holding up. Could always setup with the t bird stuff and possibly upgrade the center later.

I have the same Set up in my shop. I purchased the rear end. Then found Team 321. Then really started measuring it. It's not going to set anywhere close to low enough for me. Now I've gone with the Jaguar XJS suspension all around. I haven't started my rear irs yet. I'm about half way thru the front end swap

It can be capped.... use a large oval (or round) grommet. For oval, use the same ones used on the footwell vent bowls on the cowl.

Or cut in a little plate door and the bottom. Cut a bigger plate to cover it. Then drill two or 4 little holes & tap the 1/4x 20 threads. Cut out a thin gasket. It will never leak.
Funny. We all have our own ways of doing pretty much the same thing.

Also a ggood idea. To be honest I hadn’t really thought much about this but you guys have me thinking and it really does need to be covered

Sorry for the slow reply. I agree with you and am scaling back on the HP. I am shooting for around 500 or 525 now. I was told this would probably be on the edge of max HP the tbird could take. I guess if it breaks I will up grade. Still not sure of the gears I’m going to use have to see how big a tire I can squeeze under there an go from there.
With the stout engine up front (whether 500 or 700 HP) you are getting into drag race territory. I think a straight axle will take it much better... with a 4 link if you like. A well built 9" or Dana 60.
A D60 from an F250 with the ends and axles changed to match your front bolt pattern would take just about anything you can give it.
