I think I wore the shiney off my ring gear. It started to sound like a school bus at 90,000 miles. I was kind of disapointed in the mileage as it's a Ford Motorsports Traction Lock (4:11). It's over at the shop for a post mortem.
What do you guys like for gear oil? I would like to use synthetic but am afraid it would leak.
In my '73 and '83 I run 80W90 GL-5. Leaks with syn usually occur when the seals/gaskets get some age on them, but not always. If I were you I would stick with the GL-5 unless you are running high RPM's alot. Then, again, I would still use it but change it more often.
88W-90 GL-5 with the 4oz Ford additive. I've got a Torq-Line posi unit under the back end of my 57 - they specifically recommended not using a synthetic in there.
Nothing against the synthetics - I've just done OK with a good quality gear oil.
Also Richmond gears seem to run a tad noisier in some applications than others - they work fine, just slightly more noise. I've actually been using Motive Gears lately with good results.
