While doing the dreaded spark plug change I noticed what appears to be a grounding wire on the firewall of the passenger side. Mine is fraying pretty bad and I was wondering what this wire is called, where it runs to, and what it controls (I guess also wondering how hard it is to replace).
I think it's the grounding strap from the firewall to the back of the engine block. To replace this wire (or double it up since it's fraying away in the middle and doubt I'll be able to reach behind the engine to disconnect/reconnect new one), could I just run another ground strap from the same firewall location to the passenger side head? I think I read somewhere someone mounted one end to the bolt in the head that holds the transmission fluid tube to the head...
Speaking as an old car parts guy, you used to be able to buy ground straps at various lengths. Find a parts store with a counter person that has the patience to look for them.
If you start seeing weird symptoms in your dash lights and interior controls, that ground is a possible culprit. Changing it may be a bit of a pain, but highly recommended, and the part probably won't cost more than ~$20 at the dealer.
