Sudden shut down, upon restart engine knocking.

2008 6.4 with 185,000 miles. Full dpf & egr delete with wastegate setup, Livewire tuning, AFE intake.

On the drive home last night, I noticed the heater was blowing cold air. If I turned the heater off, then back on it would blow hot for a minute then turn cold again. The gauge was reading 180 F. Pulled over, checked the coolant level and it was fine. Then, during a hard acceleration the truck died. Started right back up, but with a noticeable knock. After inspection, the bottom intercooler boot blew off. I replaced the boot, but still have a knock. No codes thrown, all fluids look good. There was a bit of antifreeze in the engine compartment though.

The heater and engine knock might be two totally separate issues, but kinda weird.....any ideas?

Bad fuel? Check for water.

I would be concerned about the cac cooler boot being blown off. When the boot was off, you had unfiltered air going into your engine intake. If it was raining, or water/snow on the road, you may have sucked that into the engine. You said there was antifreeze in the engine compartment. It is possible you sucked some of that antifreeze in.

Try and find the source of that antifreeze first to see if that can pinpoint any other issues. I know the 2008 trucks had radiator leakage issues, so maybe that is all, but you really need to find out. On these 6.4 engines, a healthy cooling system is critical. You have an egr delete, but are the egr coolers still installed and just blocked off? You could still have a ruptured egr cooler and that can cause a knock.

As soon as the boot blew off, the engine died immediately. It did happen with about a foot of snow on the ground, so definitely possible that some moisture went through.

It appears the antifreeze blew out the small weep hole from the top of the overflow tank.

Both EGR coolers are removed, and I have the wastegate kit installed with a max pressure of 40.

All that said, my mechanic told me today that it sounds like a bent pushrod, but it's not missing or smoking... If it was a pushrod or even a rocker arm, shouldn't there be a miss?? They're going to do some more diagnostic tests tomorrow.

I am sorry, I missed your post. Did the mechanic give you a diagnosis?
