I've been messing around with LED bulbs for the past few weeks. I really didn't want to mount aftermarket lights to my bumper so I tried three different bulbs. The left is the same in all of the pics. It's 80W Epistar LED bulb I got off of EBay. Two for $17.99 with free shipping.
Right is the $9.99 for two from Autozone.
This one is the Sylvania bulbs from O'Reillys.
$29.99 a set! The only reason I purchased these is because the pack was opened and I knew the guy behind the counter. Opened pack discount plus a manager's discount! They're not worth the extra money. I put them in my tail/turn signal.
This is the standard replacement bulb.
Both of the Epistar. BIG difference!
Wow that's a nice find for stocker replacements. I back up in the dark a lot but had to mount low to the ground bulbs since it's often with a trailer. But I've heard of guys wiring up a switch to kill the vehicle reverse lights so they can see past the trailer to what they are doing, so maybe I could still do something like what you've got there.
Would they blind other drivers in a parking lot or is that just the camera?
Those are definitely bright, so bright messed up my eyes and can`t see the key board. LOL
Who cares if you blind some one in the parking lot, they will definitely know you are backing up.
With most vehicles, the back up lights are dismal for sure, don`t really light much up.
I replaced the tail lights on my 86 F-250 with a set off (I think it was) a 91 F-250 or 350 at PNP when they had a 1/2 off sale.
The 86 back up light only shines straight to the rear, and a small area.
The replacement back up part raps around the whole lower part of the lens, so it shines out to the sides. Big improvement with just the 1156 bulbs.
With the Led`s should really light up the area.
Ordered my bulbs on the 11th and this evening (17th) I pulled them out of the mail box.
These are the 3157 80W bulbs. These have a flat end, where the bulbs in my 86 are the old style 1156, 1157 style round ends.
kla94, I see you have a 94 PU, are your bulbs in that year different, IE did they change the sockets?
or is their an adaptor these plug into first to fit the old style sockets?
Confused out here is the cold frozen waste lands of Nevada.
Mine has the push in type (3157). They do have some that have the same description with the 1156 style socket. I haven't had any experience with them though.
There's some cheaper on there also.
Thanks for the info. I didn`t catch the difference in the ends of the bulbs when I was looking at them, I was blinded by their brightness LOL
Wonder what year Ford changed the harness in the tail lights?
It`s back to PNP and start looking for a TL Harness.
The whole industry replaced 1156/1157 with 3156/3157 over several years, late '80s to early '90s. Bulb assignments are in the owner's manual. Every now and then, Advance Auto puts these Sylvania white 1156s - Sylvania 1156 ZEVO LED Bulb, 2 Pack 1156LED.BP2: Advance Auto Parts - on sale for $20-ish or less, and there's always at least a 20% discount code available online. They're crazy bright.
