I have a 92 ford ranger 2.3 engine , serious loss of power, if i run it out of gas i regain power for short term but then the power loss returns and when it is present acceleration is slow and at top end results in air intake hose collapse, i havent been able to pull any codes but im leaning towards my fuel starvation but i dont understand what if any conditions cause the intake air hose collapse on accelleration (and no its not blocked, itll collapse the hose connected to nothing upstream) and no its not the hose.
also cat is gone, fuel filter changed, plugs wires etc. oh and not the timing...
There is supposed to be a coiled wire inside the hose to keep it open. If there is not a mass air flow sensor, try running the truck with just a filter mounted to the throttle body, temporarily. If there is no loss of power, the problem is the hose itself. I can't really come up with a link between fuel starvation and the hose collapsing.
I have disconnected the hose from the throttle body and ran it up the street. Power greatly improved, but ran like crap ( there is a mass air flow sensor) However it can't be the hose, I promise you, if I run it out of gas the power WILL return (for a while), acceleration will be fast and the hose will in no way collapse...
What do you mean by "run it out of gas"? Do you mean that power returns for a while after you add fuel to the tank? If so try opening the gas cap when the problem happens. If this helps then the fuel system is not vented properly.
What I mean is drive the truck till it goes putt, putt, cough, cough, blah, I'm out of gas I can't go anymore. Then I'll add some fuel to the tank and VROOM !! The truck will haul *** for as much as 50 miles or so, then power goes out the window. As far as taking off the gas cap, I read about that somewhere else here on this site and tried it. It did'nt work.
