Also....for what it's worth, i had a three year old battery completely die on me a few years ago. Worked fine, drove somewhere and parked, and couldn't start it. Deader than a door nail. Tried charging it, but no luck. Stuck a new battery in and has worked perfect since then.
there are several ways for a battery to die.. quickly or NOT.
first and sudden.. is an internal break... remember a truck battery is (6) singe cell batteries .. connected to a common buss. common buss breaks .. its dead.
a cell buckles and shorts.. or stuff fall into bottom storage area and makes contact with bottom of said cell. 1 cell dead.

Your scenario dovetails with mine perfectly. Have yet to even look at the problem, what with truck 25 miles away, it being parked outside and it being cold! Time is not of the essence here, to say the least.
If I can get to it before the step-son I would like to a) figure out how the battery is, b) what volt reading I can get across the terminals and c) whether it will take/hold a charge.
If the step-son gets to it before me he will simply throw a new battery in and hope it addresses/solves the no start problem.
My fear is a new battery shall indeed solve the no-start problem short-term; until the battery goes dead again ...

if it starts up with the new battery, I'd say you're all set and shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Well, step-son threw a new battery in and she runs fine. I do not think he had the old battery tested. So, I will never know if it was just run down and in need of a charge, or dead and unable to hold a charge.
I have to suspect dead and unable to hold a charge as after he had it on a charger overnight it still would not crank.
I am considering the problem solved and this thread closed. Tx for all the input!
