2002 No Start Problem

2002 F250 V10
Ambient temp is 4-9 degrees

Step-son borrowed truck. I started it at 9 in the morn and moved it to a different parking spot on street. No problem starting.

Step-son came at 11 and took truck. It started no problem.

He drove it to work. At 5 p.m. would crank, but not start. A jump got it running.

On charger all night. Would not crank this morn. Would not crank even when jumped.

Are we looking at a bad battery or something else?

Test the voltage on the battery; that's the best way to tell. On the other hand, if you know that the battery is old, just put a new one in.

I hear you on testing for voltage.

I would do that, but truck is at step-son's house, out of doors and temp right now is at 0 or below.

I prefer to wait until the temp rises to at freezing before doing anything!

I do not want to spend a couple hundred bucks on a battery if mine is good, only having to then spend more bucks on correcting the no start problem.

when ready. take battery to auto parts store.. after charging it..

have a 100 amp load test done.. most do it free..

only get the 100 amp test.. will tell if good or not.

Also....for what it's worth, i had a three year old battery completely die on me a few years ago. Worked fine, drove somewhere and parked, and couldn't start it. Deader than a door nail. Tried charging it, but no luck. Stuck a new battery in and has worked perfect since then.

there are several ways for a battery to die.. quickly or NOT.

first and sudden.. is an internal break... remember a truck battery is (6) singe cell batteries .. connected to a common buss. common buss breaks .. its dead.

a cell buckles and shorts.. or stuff fall into bottom storage area and makes contact with bottom of said cell. 1 cell dead.

and many other ways.

Your scenario dovetails with mine perfectly. Have yet to even look at the problem, what with truck 25 miles away, it being parked outside and it being cold! Time is not of the essence here, to say the least.

If I can get to it before the step-son I would like to a) figure out how the battery is, b) what volt reading I can get across the terminals and c) whether it will take/hold a charge.

If the step-son gets to it before me he will simply throw a new battery in and hope it addresses/solves the no start problem.

My fear is a new battery shall indeed solve the no-start problem short-term; until the battery goes dead again ...

if it starts up with the new battery, I'd say you're all set and shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Well, step-son threw a new battery in and she runs fine. I do not think he had the old battery tested. So, I will never know if it was just run down and in need of a charge, or dead and unable to hold a charge.

I have to suspect dead and unable to hold a charge as after he had it on a charger overnight it still would not crank.

I am considering the problem solved and this thread closed. Tx for all the input!
