I recently went and purchased a 7.3 IDIT for parts. I ran an ad for a used injection pump and received a reply that he had a complete engine for sale. After inspecting the motor I discovered it is a 1994 Factory turbocharged 7.3. My intentions were to pull the pump injectors and Turbo and put them on my normally aspirated engine that has 149k. After doing some reading it appears that these engines are really pretty stout.I personally got to see the turbo engine run as it started instantly cold. Now my question, is it worth all the work to take out a good running normally aspirated motor and replace it with this Turbo version?
I actually had went and purchased a wrecked 1995 Powerstroke F250 5 speed to swap in this IDI body. I just sort of like the rattle and simplicity of indirect inj. I guess now I'm going to have to either came up with and IDI t flexplate or swap this 5 speed setup in. I figure it will take just about as much time to strip the turbo parts and swap them onto the non-turbo as it would just switch the whole motor.
IDIT has 167k. The only thing I noticed when it started is that it's smokes black just a tad more out the exhaust than my normally aspirated upon initial startup. It started effortlessly with no odd noises. I was able to purchase the entire motor for less than a used Turbo set up on eBay.
The smoke could be and likely is an easy fix after you get some time to toy with it. I'd do the whole swap. Before you put it in, do a good look over of it to see if you need to fix anything.
Does the fact a IDI T has a different flywheel with more bolts create a problem getting parts to keep it going ?
I have one and have come to the same conclusion after research, some people feel this is the best one of them all overall Ford did so I am completely going through mine now but mine has 240 on it.....
I find that the e4od is an annoying unit. I spliced a resistor into my brown yellow wire on my old 1990 and it worked so well that I took it back out thinking that it may be damaging something
I was having problems with my E4 going into limp mode and still do again, I fixed it once because the cab interior roof light was shorting out and it is wired into the transmission. Easily one of the stupidest things I have ever seen from the Ford factory but the gurus on this site know all so it was not a problem but watch for it.
I have a C6 laying around with a Gear Vendors overdrive that is the cure for the old E4.......
And the build victim. It will go from n/a 7.3,E4 to a 1994 idit 5speed thanks to the donor truck. The powerstroke in the rolled truck almost landed in this one,but I chase electrons for a living.I am going full mechanical on this one
Realsloww,I have a Ranger gear splitter I almost put in front of a 4spd,but the donor truck came w a new zf and clutch.I tow a lot,and the 8 speeds with the ranger means you always have the right gear.
