DEF Question

So I have reached my first service, went into the dealer and had it performed, when I got it back I noticed the DEF gauge had not been reset. I asked them to reset it and they said I don't know how let me ask a tech. when he came back he said drive it around a bit it should reset, if not its broke, yup those were his words. nice. so I have put about a 100 miles on it since and it has regenerated since and the gauge has not moved.

Does anyone have a clue about how to reset the gauge ooorrrrrrr how long does it take to reset???

Thanks

I would think the DEF Gauge would automatically reset when you fill the DEF Fluid tank. Did the ford dealer top the DEF tank off?

Mine was 3/4 low when I had the truck serviced..... Dealer refilled and it reset on it's own. That was at about 5800 mile mark. I would check to see if it actually had DEF put in the tank or do it myself and go from there by driving it about. Items overlooked by the dealer are not uncommon.

I watched him put some in maybe it was not filled all the way. not sure.
How long did it take for yours to reset after filling?

I'm sorry that I can't give you that information as I am still finding all the New To Me Ford dashboard gadgets and how they work etc. I checked it at about 300 miles after the service. Most folks in the under 2017 threads report it takes a little while of driving... How much that is? Unknown. I know there are YouTube videos that explains how the DEF system and the DEF tank works or registers the fluid levels. Interesting and it may help you understand.

My understanding is that the DEF system and the regeneration process are two separate systems and a regeneration will have no effect on the DEF level.

you are correct def is sprayed into the system to turn it exhaust into harmless nitrogen and water. Regen burns it out, not the def but the particles that collect

Regarding your question about the DEF gauge, I am curious what trim level you have? More precisely, what level of productivity screen do you have? My DEF gauge is electronically rendered on my 8" productivity screen gauge cluster. It is an analog gauge and isn't reset, but rather just adjusts to the actual level in the DEF tank. Maybe there is a different DEF gauge for different trim levels? I have about 10k miles on my XLT and have filled DEF twice, both time were from about half talk to full. It took the DEF gauge about five minutes or so to make its way to 'full'. The gauge doesn't react immediately.

I am a little puzzled by your comment stating 'every time it regions (I think you meant regen) it goes down'. DEF does not have anything to do with the regen process. Here is a great thread on the diesel exhaust system and process. Look at Troverman's comments specifically.

If your dealer actually filled your DEF tank and the gauge didn't read full after some time, you might have a problem, but then again there may be different representations of DEF level that require a dealer reset. That question is over my head for sure.

WTF)&*&% I hope not I just remember watching him during it in and running out then asking the parts guy for more then I walked away.

Also they did a wash at the end of the service and it came out dirtier than when it when in when I told them about they called up the car wash girl and she got pissed and tore out of there like she stole my truck I was pissed and let them know about it. I do not drive my truck like that and no one has driven my truck till this point and it will not happen again if they don't respect people property.

Interesting. DEF usage is pretty much continuous and is not used solely during a regen. In fact, it is likely DEF is not injected at all during a regen, because it would lower exhaust gas temperature.

There is no "reset" after a refill - there are probes in the DEF tank which measure level through continuity. You should immediately see the DEF gauge register full after refilling.
