Clutch/Electric Issues?
I have a '96 350 with the 460 and a 5speed. It is my daily driver. Drove it all morning, with no issues. It sat about 12 hours while I was at work, and when I got out, all hell had broken loose! List of symptoms, all of which showed up at the same time:
- Grinding sound when depressing clutch pedal (accompanied by a dimming of headlights and dash lights). Still engaged transmission and truck drove fine, with the exception of the grinding every time I shifted. This went away after the truck was going 30+ mph.
- Radio, wipers, heater, speedometer, odometer, turn signals all went out.
- ABS and e-brake warning signals were both on the whole time.
I don't even know where to start with this. I'm in college and work full-time so I'm pretty strapped for $$ and time, so would love to fix this myself. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for any help!
Sounds like your starter solenoid is staying engaged and every time you push the clutch the neutral safety switch is allowing the starter to re engage.
It is either that or your ignition switch is stuck and holding it engaged, thus when you push the clutch in it engages the starter.
At least that is what it sounds like. Without the key in, push the clutch and see if it tries to start(if it does, it is the starter solenoid on the inner fender). If it doesn't then it might have been the key holding the ignition switch?
With the ABS light and such staying lit, it sounds like the key was sticking. Try wiggling the key around and do it again. Does your key return back to the RUN position easily? Could be the switch under the column. Easy fix and not too expensive.
When i had the same problem with my 87 the BATT & start pins in the ignition switch were shorted together & i removed the trigger wire from the starter relay so i could drive it without chewing up the flywheel&starter. Might be the same problem with yours.
If yours has a fender mount start relay pull the trigger wire off of it, If the relay is in a fuse/relay box under the hood yank it out. This should stop the clutch down grinding til you find the problem.
