Well heres the story, 98 ranger 2wd 4cyl 5spd. In august it started doing this. Get in, turn the key to on position lights radio guages everything comes on, push in the clutch turn the key to start the stereo and air get interrupted but nothing, no clicks no pops, no turning over. Replaced the battery in august and it fixed the problem. Then in November did the same thing. Turn the key, everything gets interrupted like usual but nothing from under the hood. Took it to our local mechanic, he cleaned the connections on the battery, replaced the starter wire, replaced the starter and it worked fine. Today it did it again. I swapped the clutch engagement switch this morning since I had an extra one, nothin, swapped the number 6 relay in the box under the hood and nothing. Relay number 5 is on its way tomorrow. If that doesnt work where do I go next. Dont have a voltage tester here at the apartment and home is 1000 miles away. Might pick one up tomorrow though.
Ok so switching neutral/clutch (whichever you want to call it) safety switches didnt help, neither did switching out the 5 and 6 relays (ignition/starter and starter relays). With the ignition on, clutch depressed and connecting the lead from the solenoid to the starter I got the starter to spin. So that leaves the ignition relay circuit to the solenoid and the solenoid to blame for this right? I'm pickin up a volt meter on my way back from our research site tomorrow.
