2009 Dual Climate issue

Hey all. My driver blend door in my 09 F250 Lariat (dual climate) is bad, I have figured out how to replace it and plan to do it soon. However, many directions say to place the blend door setting to "neutral" before starting the process to make sure the gear is aligned properly. Is this necessary? How can I be sure it will actuate the door correctly, and is not aligned to the wrong position?
