2017 Gum Flapping Thead....
Have a few things to get done first and a Back to Ballston / Founders Day type potluck picnic in the Ballston Park to go to on Sunday. Then we can hit the road.
So, how much entertainment have you had watching the new traffic lights at Baker/5th St.?
22.5 feet which is smaller than the 24 it is replacing, but ended up being a couple of hundred pounds heavier, which surprised me. Has a big fish box in the transom and I added four pole mounting points. Still have to figure out where I'm going to put the 2 pair of rocket launchers.
I had planned on 'but fishing in May, but as it turned out I had an appointment with a knife wielding surgeon on the 2nd who, just to add insult to injury, told me "no" and put me on a 6 week restriction to lifting, pulling or tugging no more than a gallon of milk.
Still need to get some hours on her before we head out to sea though...the little snafu with the bearing and spindle threw the entire schedule off by a month and a half and then the surgery added another month and a half to that.
Interesting note...The boat was made in Winchester/Wilbur (Roseburg) just about a mile from the house we had down there in Winchester after I had taken the transfer from McMinnville to Roseburg. Used to see a bunch of those things in shrink wrap sitting on blocks waiting for shipment or 3 of them stacked on a flatbed heading down I-5.
Definitely plan on chasing some Tuna if they get in close enough. Need to go after some Chinook as well. Just don't know if it will be on Seabiscuit IV, my hunting & fishing partners boat or my cousins 30 footer out of Depot Bay. The last Tuna trip took 80 gallons of fuel.
Since they closed the Rock Pile down, 'but & Ling fishing hasn't been the same or near as fun. (Yep, that was a long time ago, but I have a long memory...) I really don't like the ranch, nothing but small chickens out there and a 70 mile round trip. When the pile was still fishable we had a "boat rule" of no butts allowed in the boat that were not at least 50#'s. Our Newport record was 105#. A lot were in the 60 to 70 range. Since they closed the pile down I don't think I've caught anything over 50 lbs. and that was on my hunting/fishing partners Dory out of PC.
Sorry to hear about the surgery. Hope you heal up quick!
If it's the boat factory that was by the freeway I remember seeing all the boats wrapped and ready for shipment when I would pass through.
If you can fish off a 30'er I would do that instead no question! Although there is something about being your own captain. I've tuna and halibut fished a bit. Mostly chase salmon now. I enjoy it but it's a ton of work but as long as you have a good crew it's not too bad. I agree with you on the chicken ranch. I don't care to fish out there much anymore and I think the fish are getting smaller with the increased pressure. My rule was nothing less than 36" which was like a 40ish pound fish. 50-70 were common and we did get a 100 pounder on an epic day. The Pile is still my favorite place and we've done well there. It's kinda screwed up now tho with the quota since I liked to fish it late July and August as a double header paired with Silvers. Harrisons Ridge is where I usually went. I might still try it in my new tub but it's not really not set up to run on Lake Pacific very well.
My Dad and Buddy on an epic day out of Newport...

Had always questioned the signals at 4th/Adams. Originally put in with the swimming pool and City Park in mind, but.......
Shrink wrapped boats - that was the place. MP 129 Winchester-UCC-Wilbur interchange. They built and opened the plant a while after I had taken the Transfer to Roseburg. North River was just up the road. Bayliner stayed open for somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 years and then closed up shop. They left several shrink wrapped boats sitting there for quite some time before someone came and got them.
That's some nice looking fish there! They have the regs so screwed up now I'm beginning to question the feasibility of even taking the boat over for anything except Salmon. July-Aug-Sept. is usually best for haven't a halfway decent bar and ocean to get out on. That lake can get pretty nasty and 0 vis fog can move in rapidly.
Breaks over, back to work.
Off to adjust the toe in my new tow rig, finish the exhaust system and play with my mutts!
