So the axle tag is incorrect, or the axle has been 3.54 replaced with a 3.73?

OP stated axle code C1.

Sorry, I can't tell if OP is working on a 95 or some other.

NOTE: Tagline the vehicle you want help with! AND any mods! Sure would help me (and I'm sure a few others) FOCUS.

I'm planning on having this thing a long time. Should I change it out to a 3.73? I rarely pull anything and what I do pull a 6 cylinder could pull easily.
As compares with a few others I run 2025 RPM @ 70 MPH - 6spd 3.73.
If your axle tag says C1 (3.73) assuming AT and you are revving 2400, maybe you should log your torque converter slip.

Board, so I did some math (with the help of EXCEL);

R&P: 4.11
Tire Height 29.9 (Stock P235/75/16)
Speed: 70 MPH
Trans Ratio (4R100) .70
RPM's + 2,295 (say 2,300 as I only carried it to the hundreds)

R&P: 3.73
Tire Height 29.9 (Stock P235/75/16)
Speed: 70 MPH
Trans Ratio (4R100) .70
RPM's + 2,083 (say 2,100 as I only carried it to the hundreds)

212 RPM Difference

Change ANYTHING in the equation i.e. Tire Size (Height) Transmission Ratio, etc., you change the end Sum.

Don't know the cost of change over. But, a cost comparison and increase in mileage would determine the cost effectiveness of the project IMO.

I'm talking about the 01, its a C1 axle code. I also have a 95. My convertor may not be locking up. What EPA mods are your talking about? Thanks for all the help

Here's the reason I would have preferred the 4:10's. I have enough power to pull that 26k lb load faster than it should be pulled...that's not a question.

The reason is I prefer to tow 26k at a reasonable speed....60-65 mph. That puts the rpms around 2k. In my opinion there is a significant tendency lug and create high EGT. The 4:10 would give me a couple hundred rpm to offset that.

My 95 had 4:10's...didn't make near the power that my 01 does, but I felt it was more driveable at my preferred towing speed.

Good point!

I don't mind 70 mph on typical flatland interstate hwy, definitely too fast for two lane or mountain roads - particularly downhills!

I have the 6spd, and prefer 18k-22k RPM for best MPG/power range. I tend to shift to achieve this.

EPA has forever forced manufacturers to meet constantly more restrictive standards. The electronic engine management of modern vehicles was not introduced to improve performance or durability, but to meet EPA expectations.

Many of the new designs and modifications manufacturers have come up with are prioritized to meet these arbitrary EPA edicts without reducing performance - maintenance and durability issues be damned.
