I have lots of play int he steering wheel! The steering box seems to be free from severe leakage etc... Is there grease fittings on it? DO ue regular grease in the fittings??
there is an adjustment,, you should consult a front end alignment shop to adjust this because if you adjust it too tight you can damage the steering box.
jackup the front end of your truck and try moving either front wheel left to right and back. See how much play is in the movement.....probably alot. Check the draglink...the steel rod connected to both front wheels and see if it has any play at each point of attachment . it looks like a pool cue for a Sumo wrestler. While you got it jacked up......locate the steering shaft that connects the steering wheel to the steering box......inspect the "rag joint" . have a friend turn the steering wheel lock to lock and see if you can observe any play in the rag joint. with the hood up obviously!!! you may need to replace it. happy hunting...sk
You can tighten down the preload a tad, maybe 3/8 turn. If the box is worn out it wont hurt and might help for a while but like was said check the tie rod ends. Squeeze them with a large pair of adjustable pliers. There shouldn't be any free movement when you do.
