This part is off a 1956 F100 miunted on the transmission cover under the gas pedal. It is a spring loaded plunger, but I'm not sure what it is used for.
I would SWAG it is a crude aftermarket speed limiter. During WW11, B. F. Goodrich marketed such a device called the Speed Warden. The device could be adjusted so the spring loaded plunger alerted the driver when he was at the speed limit. If the driver pressed harder, the spring could be overcome to gain additional power in emergencies or hill climbing.
