My tuck has been making a whining noise very similar to this and only when it's below freezing out. At 5 degrees it's even louder. Anyone experience this? Just noticed it the other day. Sounds like power steering whine. Thx guys. I have the 6.2 super duty.
It could be either something rotating on the front of the engine as you suspect or it could be air leaking into the intake parts (air filter box etc). Maybe you could put your hand around some of the ducting and boxes or give them a little push here and there to see if you can make the noise change.
My trucks been making this noise for awhile. Dealer can't figure it out either. I used a stethoscope and it definitely is the tensioner pulley bearing then I took serpentine belt off and spun all the pulleys in the front and tensioner pulley was real rough. so rather than leave at the dealer again. I ordered one from rock auto for 29 bucks. Hoping this will solve the problem.
Mine used to make a whine at cold temps but only at certain RPMs and only until the engine warmed up. I was told by Ford it's the way the cold air goes through the intake. Truck only made the noise the second winter I owned it though.
I have read the whine is attributed to the air intake when temps are cold. This could be part of the reason why the new intake is totally redesigned on my 2017. I have not had the whine, I started my truck in single digits last weekend, no noise.
Took off serpentine belt and started truck. Noise is gone. Spun the pulleys and it seems the tensioner pulley is toast. I ordered a new belt, tensioner pulley and 2 idler pulleys which were a bit loud. Got everything from rockauto for under 100$. This is the only problem with my truck since I bought it. I'm done complaining about the 6.2! It's the most trouble free motor I've ever owned!
When I pulled the serpentine belt off mine there wasn't any whine either. Thought about air intake but it's definitely not that even though dealer tried to sell me that line of BS. I don't think the dealer even checked the pulleys because they would have heard how loud that bearing was.

Did yours make the noise at all rpms when the engine was running? When mine first started making the noise I could've swore it was coming from the alternator or one of the pulleys in the front center of the engine but Ford said no. Mine hasn't made the noise now for the last two winters so I don't know what to think, if I had a bad bearing I would think it should've totally failed by now.
Mine only made the noise at a certain rpm and at no others.
Mine makes the noise for about 2 minutes when I first start it. When I hit the gas the noise gets louder. Once it warms up the noise disappears. Doesn't make any noise on warmer days. I'm very confident it's the pulley bearings. We'll see in a few days when they arrive.

That's different than what mine was doing but I agree that yours is probably a bad bearing. I've replaced a lot of pulleys on my semi and they gave the exact symptoms as yours. Nonstop whine at all speeds and after they warm up the noise stops. Only one time have I had a bearing go bad and not give any symptoms other than it locked up and ruined the belt.
Tensioner pulley arrived from rockauto and the pulley is nylon. Even went to dealer and they had the same one. The parts guy said they switched over to nylon sometime in 2015. I'm debating whether to return it and get an aftermarket steel pulley?

Mine will be the same. I'm surprised ford change them to nylon. Maybe too many noise complaints.
