EEC Computer

1990 4.0l XL Aerostar.

I have determined it is time to replace the EEC IV (computer). It seems this is a silver box, way up high behind the Drivers side dash. The wire connector harness is a bolt on connector, on the firewall on the drivers side of the engine compartment.

I had this connector off once cleaning the connector. Once off, how do you get the computer out?

I have priced the computer replacment at $ 159.00 oem. After I get the old one out, do I just put the new one in, hook back up the battery and start the car?

Any help from someone who has been thru this would be appreciatted.

Please, no questions on the need to replace the computer as I have been thru 3 different threads and replaced virtually everything electrical 1 or more time. It has to be either the computer or the harness and I have checked the harness as much as possible.

Thanks,

John

Yes, that's all you need to do. I won't question the need to replace it, only say that throwing parts at problem is an expensive way of fixing things, you could have bought another 13 year old Aerostar with the money you spent so far!

Your right, but where is the fun in that. Like Johnny Cash sang "I'm buidling it one piece at a time.

Also, another 13 year old Aerostar would have had most of the same problems.

Do you know how the computer comes off after the bolt on wiring harness connector is removed from the firewall?

Thanks,

John

Well sometimes when I'm trying replace or take apart something I've never done before I head down to the local Wrecking Yard & try it on one of the junkers first.

That way I make sure I don't break something important plus alot of the times most of the items in the way has already been removed so you can see what you want to get to better.

Only problem is, in this area, I have been to 4 major Junk yards and there are no Aerostars with enough stuff left on them to matter.

Tried having them notify me when one arrives, but as soon as I get there everything is gone. They let the local dealers and repair places have first go and then there is nothing left.

Thanks,

John

Have you seen what a new one looks like?

It should show you if it has holes in it that bolts go through or if they screw into it to hold it on.

Also if you look up under the dash on the ones than has had them removed you should be able to see how they hooked on.

I believe if you are looking at the computer plug you should see a small bolt on each side. (10mm head maybe) Undo those and the comp. should slide out into the eng comp.

Did you get that computer out yet? I recently replaced mine on an 1990 3.0L. Once you unplugged the connector I had to remove a little plastic bracket under the dash. The EEC comes out under the dash not through the firewall.

Yep. But I did not take off the plastic bracket. Twisting it sideways and slightly up it cleared the bracket. Getting it back on was much more fun!

I did this to get the number's. I got a replacement computer from a junk yard as the place I ordered from doubled the cost of the new one based upon the numbers.

Luckily, I found the problem was not the computer but a bad wire. But now I have a spare computer if needed.

Thanks,

John
