Went to start tonight and the starter would start to crank the engine over then the starter would disengage and make a high pitched whining sound. Wait a few seconds and sometimes it would just whine and sometimes it would attempt to turn the engine over. Tried about 10 times and engine never cranked enough to start.
1st time it's ever done this. Sitting for about a week. Colder than normal temps.i have noticed engine cranking slower than normal the last month or so.
From what I've read I'm thinking (hoping ) it's just a bad ground or loose wire.
Betting on a bad starter drive. It has a one way clutch and if goes bad, the motor will just spin, gear won't turn, engine won't start.
I put a charge on both batteries to make sure they were fully charged. Did the same thing. First try heard just a high pitched spinning noise from the start. Turned off, waited a few seconds, turned to on, waited for normal glow plug lights on dash to go out, turned to start, cranked about 1/2 a second then made the high pitched spinning noise. Hit start one more time and just got the high pitched noise and spinning sound.
