I wanted to do some of the metal that gets covered with wood or with other metal, reason for not using primer is the overspay factor. I would do wd40 or something similar but it will be on what will eventually be innacessable surfaces. Thanks for the suggestion.
These are the spots I want to clear coat BEFORE they are covered. I looked into the rustoleum aerosol clear, its an option. I also see some guys using turtle wax or linseed oil. I'd prefer something VERY permanent. Seems like an oil would attract dirt/dust. Ill keep looking.
needs clear coat
I think I need to tarnish/patina that fuel tank a little bit.....
PS
I put up a new youtube video, I did some DIY lizard skin inside my driver door. This I researched for a long while before I did it. Im happy with the results, not sure of the performance YET. I didn't use the conventional latex like some guys do, I couldn't bring myself to put house paint on my car.
I suggest that you use a clear metal primer to get a good bond to the metal and then spray a coat or two of clear spray paint to provide a sealed surface. Mask off all parts that you don't want this finish to contact. I have watched your utube videos. You are a highly skilled metal worker and builder! Keep them coming! I see that you dropped the f-100 title.
As far as the 'f100' yes, I dropped it, and I def appreciate the correction. Its like walking around chuckecheese with your zipper down and no one telling you.
I'm currently working on mounting the bed to the frame. Im building custom brackets and wondering; does anyone here use rubber isolators for their bed mounts? It seems it would help with vibration but I don't recall any OEM vehicle I've owned using them.
I think some rubber would be fine. On my 29, I used some rubber belting that is about 1/4" thick and used a hole saw in the drill press to cut some big rubber washers. I made my engine mounts and body mounts from those, worked good.
I found some of the rustoleum clearcoat in satin and sprayed a few random objects I had around just as an experiment. We'll see what kinda results I get.
I just got the bed mounted up with some custom made brackets. I put up a video, Check it out!
I have been watching your videos! The use of rubber isolators when you mounted the pickup bed is definitely better than the wimpy stock pieces. I am really in awe of your shop and your fabrication skills.
Hey fte
I just finished work on the bottom of the cab, Im very happy with the results. I did some metal repairs, rust eradication/prevention, seam sealer and some heavy sound/heat control coatings. Im getting ready to start on the bedfloor. I have some old barnwood that Ill be using.
(I filmed all steps and edited them into 6-10 minute episodes, a new one releases on my youtube account [unitedstatesofbuild]every Friday for the next month or so)
Happy holidays FTE! Its been busy but I just got a few parts in and will be doing some more work and posting videos on this truck. I picked up a '53 ch*vy 3100 from the original owner and did a ton of work on it over the last couple months. there were a couple 3am mornings in the shop! Anyways, I contacted rocky hinge to ask about BEARCLAW latches for this truck. I was told that they have a hinge but it wont fit in the stock location due to the window channel. I know im not the first one to do this upgrade, any other jailbar owners wanna weigh in????
