Fuel SELECTOR valve. Has nothing to do with fuel/water separation. It selects which tank feeds fuel to (and accepts fuel return from) the engine.
The jerry-can idea is to try to run it FROM a jerry-can, as a way of bypassing the FSV, in case it's the issue. If the fuel bowl fills faster by running the supply to a jerry-can, that would suggest the FSV isn't allowing full fuel flow. But how slow is "slow"? Remember, the first stage of the fuel pump is pretty low pressure, what is it, like 5-7 psi. That's what feeds the fuel bowl.
HI Knottyrope I having a similar problem with my f350 Could you draw picture of how & where these connections are. Not sure about inlets & returns. Thank you. I read so many of your posts, there really good & helpful. Friskyjake

Ok the bowl is filling slowly,So far I've discharged the batteries twice and the bowl is not even half full. I do not know what the rate of fill should be.I have not tried the jerry can yet because I am confused on hose connections .i am assuming that i Connect 2 hoses to the 2 quick connect fittings on the drivers side frame? If so how do I connect? Take the quick connect apart and slide a hose and clamp over the fittings?I also put 2 brand new batteries in the truck this morning.if I pour diesel in the bowl and close it up shouldn't the truck run, at least till the bowl runs out ?why do I have no pressure@ the shrader valve when cranking?
update: I cranked till the bowl filled up.still have zero pressure at the shrader while cranking
To nottyrope Thankyou for the advice. I had 35 lbs of pressure on my liquid filled gauge so I next changed the IDM. Started up so quickly it shocked me. Now I,ll have to get another good [refurnished] IDM for a spare. Those are getting expensive. Oh well if you need one you need one. Thanks again Friskyjake
It's been a while since I have had one apart, but I think that triangle shape piece should have a pointed plastic piece on the opposite end the spring goes in to.
I thought there was a little white colored plastic ball to act [I think} as a check valve ?It,s been a least 5 years since I had mine apart. When I changed my fuel filter last week It fan for maybe 25 to 30 seconds & then died. Just as if I had turn off the ignition key. I finally found a used Idm @ a wrecking yard & installed it & it started up so quickly it shocked me. Now, I had checked the Idm by shaking the heck out of it but could not hear any water in it. So now I,m a happy camper. Friskyjake
Auto enginuity look for codes but that's it. Won't let you buzz test, you can check harness wiring with multimeter but that's it. I carry a spare idm in my truck
I just tested the oil pressure coming from the o ring boss on the passenger side it went up to 3100 psi and held while cranking.still have no smoke coming out the tail pipe.I pulled the CPR plug and still no fire.I have worked my way down the no start flow chart.I am stumped.Ive thrown so much money and parts in this damn truck.
I read a post about the fuel bowl taking about 8-12 seconds to fill up .it took 4 minutes for me to fill my bowl but the FPR will build to 20 psi while cranking
I think I would disconnect the power going to the glow pug relay & give a it a shot of starting fluid. Hope it is not to cold were you are because of stopping your glow pulls from working. If it starts [runs] then you know the electronics sensors ect are working so your problem is fuel related. Good luck. Friskyjake
