1985 Bronco Timing Gear
My timing gear on my cam stripped out, I broke it all down and went to replace it. While all the work I was doing I didn't check to see if it was TDC before I put the gears on, I had it all together when I started to doubt I remembered to check the actual TDC. I did line up the TDC marks on the gears. Finished putting it all back together and it wont start. Turns over fine, doesn't sound like any back pressure from valves being closed at the wrong times. Is it possible I have the cam gear 180 degrees off or can it not do that if you like the marks up. Want to know if I should break back into it any redo my mess.
Side note, got a new distributor for it. It came with a black TFI unit. I also have a working gray one and decided to try it in my efforts to make the truck work but made no difference. Should I leave the black one in or change it for the gray?
Thanks for reading!

Make sure the engine is TDC on the compression stroke for Cyl#1 lift the distributor cap & insure that the rotor in the distributor is pointing to Cyl #1 on the cap. If it is not you will have to pull the distributor rotate it 180° and reinstall then reset set the base timing. That is the first thing I would check

I am pretty sure that gray denotes "push start" tfi and black is "computer controlled dwell", but i am not an eec IV expert.
If you have the little extended screwdriver it might be wise to try swapping modules.

Also there is more to the story that might help- One day I started it and drove it 20 miles to a shopping center, parked it, ate lunch, came back and I started it then put it into reverse and it died as soon as it went into gear. Now this motor had tons of neglect from the first owner, I timed it maybe like a few weeks before this happened and it was running amazingly better. The timing chain was very worn out.
I have read that some rotors are different, but again I do not know the specifics.
So i am going to defer to others on this forum that know a lot more details and nuances about your ignition than me.
