ignition switch: "accesory" vs. "run"

The other day I drove my Dent to work so that I could bring some large garbage from home, and throw it in their dumpster.

I guess a good song must've been playing on the radio when I backed in next to the dumpster, because I turned the key back to "accessory," and hopped out to unload. When I got to the back of the truck, I saw that my back-up lamps were lit! Befuddled, I walked back to the cab to turn the key to "off," and when I opened the door, I noticed that the heater blower was still running too!
Is it supposed to work that way? I looked at the wiring diagram for the '76 models on another site, and it looks like "accessory" and "run" both power the same wires! If I'm reading that diagram right, there is a buss-bar, or whatever, jumpering the two positions right there at the switch.

I'm tempted to try turning it to "accessory," and then hot-wiring the primary circuit post on the starter motor relay, to see if it will actually fire up that way!

Most everything electrical powers up on accessory except the ignition coil. That way you can sit and listen to radio, wipe windows, etc. Without overheating the coil. If the engine is not running and the switch is in ignition for too long it can overheat the coil causing it to fail. During normal operation the coil is pulsing as the points or ignition module powers and depowers it to fire the plugs.

So I tried this, and it didn't start. It sounded like it wanted to, so I tried it a few times, but no dice.
I'll have to scrutinize that diagram again, because I couldn't see how the ignition wouldn't be powered up with the switch at "accy."
