04 superduty hesitation, please help

Ok I have a 2004 f250 6.0L, has 104k on it. A little back story... truck was running well when I started to get surging on takeoff and it was blowing black smoke when it surged. After it hit 1600 rpm it would blow out and run normal. So did some research and found it could be the FCIM, I have the 4 pin and tested it and had 48.5v so it tested good. Did some more research and found symtoms leading towards the ICP so I replaced that and the ICR also. Upon doing this my surging issue cleared up but now I'm getting a miss around 1200 + rpm weather it's in park Reving it or driving, but it is not throwing any codes, I did check with my code reader. I have also changed both fuel filters and have the EBP sensor on order as I hear they can be troublesome. My question is what should I do next or look at? I was trying to avoid the dealer so I can learn more about the truck in diagnosis. Any help is greatly appreciated guys!!!

Do yourself a favor and get some gauges that read live data like the scan gauge II or one of the smartphone apps like dashboss for IOS devices or torque pro for android instead of just throwing parts at it. You will need live data to sort this out.

You might have crud on the screen of the IPR, that usually causes surging. Some type of flutter at a specific RPM sound like injector sticktion, many oils additives that you could try like Rev-X, Archoil, and HotShotSecret.

Best thing is to establish a way to monitor the motor, you need live data.

I just changed the IPR so that's prob not the issue, I made sure that it was clean before install. I'll try and additive any specific suggestions on which one to use that works best?

Actually, do not rule that out. If you do the research you'll find that plenty of trucks have repeated screen blockage on IPR - so don't rule that out just because it has been recently inspected.

It's blowing black smoke...I'd bet his hesitation is turbo lag. Clean the EBP sensor and tube, use string trimmer line to open the tube feeding the sensor. Small metal tube into the exhaust manifold, make sure to poke the trimmer line all the way through it.

Clean the MAP sensor and rubber hose and the nipple at the intake manifold (Passenger side intake) and make sure the hose isn't cracked.

Then get a good code reader on the truck, look for DTC P0299. Under boost of 4lbs or more and for more than 5 seconds..... you step on it, blows black smoke, RPM comes up slowly, then she goes like hell, smoke clears?

The ebp sensor I'll do today when it gets here as I had to order it, I checked codes last night and had nothing. The icp and icr I replaced cleared the black smoke and surge issue now it's just hesitating almost like a miss around 1000-1300 rpm and when idling it has a slight miss every once in a while but very faint. Also no codes

Did you order the EBP from Ford Dealer or other source like Amazon? Be careful, you'll save a lot of time and frustration by buying your sensors through a dealer.

Dont let the others scare you about using non-ford parts.. I got my EBP sensor from Autozone after the plug snapped off.. its been on there well over a year with no issues and was waaaay cheaper than what ford wanted for it..

There is a yuuuuge caveat that goes along with that advice, things like injectors come to mind......

while ill agree with you about the injectors... theres also merrit to going directly to navistar/international for them for less than what fords selling it for.. which they dont even build their own injectors.. outside of the injectors other things such as sensors, gaskets and things like that.. you can get elsewhere...

keep in mind FORD itself didnt build the engine.. it was navistar/international that did. the parts inside it are from them relabled with motorcraft bags and boxes.. alot of the sensors among other parts also are bought from 3rd party suppliers. buying a over priced part just so it can have the word "Motorcraft" or "Ford" on the bag is stupid when it can be bought directly from the original supplier or another subcompany selling the same exact part for less than the dealers going to sell it to you for in their bag/box...

I vote that you continue to throw expensive parts at it in hopes that it will fix the problem. Live Data is useless.
