Recently purchased 86 f250 302 converted from efi to carburetor basically iv got a whole lot of wires that are cut spliced and wire nutted, truck runs fine lights radio and speedometer work. i would like to restore this truck what kindof wire harness can i get for this
I am no fan of removing EFI, but in the 85/86 trucks, the EFI wiring is essentially a complete and separate harness that passes through the firewall to the ECM mounted behind the dash. It can be removed completely and cleanly leaving behind the cab and underhood wiring which is not significantly different from the earlier carbureted trucks.
Now, I do not know what has been wire nutted and spliced in your truck, but it likely is related to the changes necessary to install the ignition system compatible with your carbureted application. Chances are , you are on your own here and what you need to do is to correct the previously sloppy workmanship. Best approach is to remove what clearly is not factory and reinstall the components properly. Pics of what you are up against would help.
I should add that if the electric fuel pumps were retained in the carburetor conversion, the wiring for these pumps will have been hopelessly Frankensteined, compromising safety and reliability. One more reason for retaining EFI.
Wiring diagrams are available here: 1986 EVTM - ???Gary's Garagemahal. Just pick the category you are interested in at the time and click on the link. And note that there are troubleshooting tips at the bottom of each set of pages as well as descriptions on how things work.
Wow i really appreciate it guys gary that looks like ot will help alot, one piece at a time! I want to restore with the carburetor, sorry for the confusion. What is DSII?
What do you have labeled "solenoid" over by the ignition coil?
I'm thinking it may be the radio suppression condenser?
I'm not sure what the lone red wire is that goes around behind the relay and disappears behind the dual reservoir.
That doesn't seem stock.
The red, white lead from the module should plug into a harness connection that is white, red.
I.e. the wire colors are reversed at that C321 connector.
Cut wires are probably coming from the EEC.
There was a thread about the correct rubber firewall grommet (boot?) to cover the hole left when removing the computer completely.
I don't remember the part number right now,, but I do remember that I found it on eBay for that person in the other thread.
When i wrote solenoid i ment the coil, do they sell any harnesses for this or while have to do each one by one gary, i really wanna get ridof all those cut wires but they are tied into some of the ones im actually useing. What should i do?
