Heater Troubleshooting

Both front and rear have their own issues.

Front: only blows luke-warm after the Ex warms up. Not warm enough to make it feel comfortable in cold weather.

Rear: No heat at all.

-I currently have the rear assembly torn apart.
-The rear actuators appear to work fine.
-The rear blend door does not appear to have any insulation blocking it from moving.
-Coolant lines at the heat control valve in the hood get warm (I've only run the Ex a few minutes to see how hot they get, so I'll run it longer this evening.
-Lines at the rear did not seem to be getting warm, so maybe a clog somewhere between the front and rear?
-Haven't taken a look at the front dash yet, trying to fix the rear first.
-sloped driveway so it's hard to test the coolant level. I'll have to remember to check it when I'm on a level spot.

Feel free to chime in or place imaginary bets on the cause lol. I've read just about everything between here and the Ford Excursion club on fb, so eventually I'll find something that needs fixin lol

How new is your Thermostat and which brand? Do you have a IR temp gun? You could test it by boiling in a pot of water.

Any idea if you're losing coolant? Which coolant are you running?

I've not changed the thermostat in the 3.5 years I've owned the Ex, so that very well could be the issue. I'll check that.

Coolant hasn't been flushed since I've owned it either and it does drop over time as I've topped it off with 50/50 from O'Reillys.

Just ran the Ex with the tuner monitoring. Coolant temp ran up to 180 and stayed there, so I guess that means the Ex has a 180 tstat? All the necessary hoses warmed up, in the hood and in the back. The rear heater core started to warm up, so maybe the blend door was just stuck after all?? Or is it possible things aren't warming up hot enough?

Strange things... I will keep digging.

My OEM Motorcraft stat runs 190° all the time. Before when I had green coolant and now the new thermostat with Ford Gold coolant.

I think you should switch it out for a Motorcraft unit and see if it changes. Draining the Degas to below the thermostat housing should be enough. I would replace the o-ring at the same time.

Few more steps of troubleshooting/replacement will be completed in the next few days hopefully. We'll see if that helps the heaters.

Update:

Coolant Flush complete, two water flushes with chemical help, new tstat, heat control valve, and coolant res tank.

Heat still only blows luke warm, but maybe more luke warm than before. Enough to make it comfortable when its 32F outside.

Didn't burp the system properly on the last refill and got an air bubble (noticed temps getting way too hot), shut her down and buddy popped the cap on the res tank without looking at the level and had mini-old faithful in the garage for a few seconds. Much fun was had by all =P

Bubble is gone and temps are much happier now. Idles warm at right around 190. Before I was only getting to 180.

The old coolant looks like coffee. Things looked pretty grimy when inspected, so maybe more to investigate on another day.

For now at least we've got fresh blood flowing and some new parts. Most importantly I got to have fun wrenching on the Ex in the random snow we got today
